I had a good friend that worked in the A&R Department at Motown Records at the time (Tom DiPierro, who went on to start his own company: Airwave Records) who advised Teena to NOT record "I'm a Sucker For Your Love", because he had issues with Rick James and felt like the song was demeaning to Teena. Teena went ahead and recorded it anyway, but later came back to my buddy Tom to confide that she regretted having recorded the song, despite the fact it became a hit. Teena said that she wished she had taken Tom's advice.

Teena thanks Tom, among others, on the back of her "Wild And Peaceful" album cover.

I wonder why she regrets it? Teena was in a relationship with Rick @ the time until the "Street Songs" tour.Even though she hid that for a long time. I wish Teena would have wrote an autobiography....

She wasn't comfortable with the term "sucker", or that the writer (Rick James) was characterizing her love for him in that manner, as Tom had pointed out to her.

As a white person myself that has been with enough black men to start an episode of "Soul Train"...lol.... I can see her hesitance in having the word "sucker" in the title as if we're all gullible idiots that will take any old kind of bullshit that a black man dishes out in order to get that almighty "black dick". I wouldn't want folks thinking I was an unhip gullible idiot either but it wasn't that serious and most folks didn't even see it that way especially since they didn't even see her since her picture wasn't on the album cover. That was a genius move also. Don't even give people a chance to judge you when they see your picture. Prove yourself first that you can get down with the best of them, and then put your picture on the album.
