Janet--DAMITA JO Appreciation

Janet's 8th studio album is definately her most underrated of the 2000s (and we all know why that is). Besides that whole SB brouhaha, this is a solid pop/R&B record, and contained not only some of her best vocals, but also one of the best dance tracks in her catalogue ("All Nite"). In spite of everything against it, it still debuted at #2, and went on to achieve platinum status, but it was certainly underappreciated.

Arguably the best dance track to come out in 2004 (and definately one of the sexiest videos). Many SICK remixes for this one as well...

she KILLED "All Nite" on GMA in NYC

Even the Queens got into the act lol

Vocally and melodically one of the best tracks from the album

Excellent Babyface-produced slow jam

Dallas Austin co-produced the slammin' Nelly-esque Sexhibition

Strawberry Bounce, with its Jay-Z sample and sexy overtones, was another hot track

She SLAYED the Strawberry Bounce performance on SNL--it's one of my favorite pieces that Gil has choreographed

The Kanye-produced I Want You, with its Motown sound, was different than anything she'd done before

I preferred the other version of the album's first single, Just A Little While, that was recorded during the DJ sessions, to the one that made the album. The Just Blaze Mix. HOTNESS

What Can I Say, an unreleased track, features vocals so on point that it's a crime the track didn't make the album

Put Your Hands On, the B-side to All Nite, sampled Grandmaster Flash's The Message, and was sensual and sexy

Could This Be Love was a killer cut that should've made the album as well

Janet has said the Neptunes-produced Ruff was the track she had the most fun recording for the album. There's only a snippet of it to be released thus far, besides a fan-made remix featuring a rap

Some of the interludes were produced by the French electronic group Telepopmusik. They're some of my fave Janet interludes

BAGS and Arnthor produced the breezy Europop mid-tempo groove, SLOlove

I love the album and Janet probably just as much as you.

But my god is there anyone you listen to or rate besides her?

Wow, that's a lot of videos!

Anyway, I used to love Janet. I don't listen to her much anymore, but I'm gonna have to go play this album again now. As I recall, it had some great songs. "Island Life" was always my favorite. "All Nite" is #2, then in no order, I love: "Damita Jo", "Thinkin' 'Bout My Ex", "Moist", "Truly" and "Just A Little While". The rest, I could do without..

Love the album cover too!

Island Life is one of janet's best Mid-tempo songs in her career.

Thats a summer jam, something you listen to while riding to the beach. nod

I agree that Island Life is a perfect summer track, and should have been one of the singles. I also agree that the album was (stupidly) stifled from doing bigger things because of the SB. Still, it was ultimately a #2 debuting, platinum album. All of her studio albums since 1986 have either gone to or debuted at number 1 (DJ and 20 YO are the exceptions at number 2). That in and of itself is an amazing feat.

The album grew on me when it came out. I don't know about it being her best of the decade, but some of the songs on it were AMAZING and strong though I don't know if I can say that for the whole album. I loved All Nite Don't Stop instantly and remember a lot of people liking it, shame it wasn't released as a single properly, it should have been the first single though I LOVE Just a Little While, both the original and JusBlaze mix. Kanye West works well with Janet, I loved his songs. I also agree Island Life was awesome, I sometimes thought of MJ's songs when hearing that for some reason I love the words and guitar of Thinkin Bout My Ex and the edge of Sexhibition as well. Also, I loved her style during the era at all those shows, the caps with matching tanks and jackets and earrings.

She really was gorgeous during this era. Not quite as thin as she was during All For You.

Yeah, Rich Harrison really had some nice tracks for her. This one and "What Can I Say" are gems. Love her vocals on these, especially What Can I Say! smile

Yes, her vocals really shined on those Rich Harrison productions. I don't know what he said to her in the studio, but he got her to SANG! lol

Some of the fan remixes are some of the best ones, but the Low End Specialists Main Mix and the Sander Kleinenberg Dub Mix are hot too. Those are the ones that stayed bumping in the clubs. There's an instrumental So So Def mix that is good too.

The 20 YO album had a few B-sides/non-released tracks:

Weekend (Debbie Deb remake that caught a lot of shit from fans, though I don't know why 'cause it's a total jam)

Roll Witchu

Clap Your Hands

*Stuck Inside This Groove (which supposedly sampled John Mayer's "Neon")

*You Crossed The Line

*these songs have never been heard or leaked

The gorgeous Let Me Know was a Discipline non-U.S. bonus track

Let Me Know
