origin of the "Oh-wee-yo" chant ( "Jungle Love", "Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" & more )

No idea where to post this topic, but i guess that The Time's chant was first around 1984.

Then i discovered the use of it by Gap Band-proteges, Billy & Baby Gap :

And after that it appeared on the Sign "O" The Times album. Is it actually originated by The Time ?...

I was always under the impression that the chant came from Da Butt by E.U. but it definitely came much later than all of the songs mentioned.

No worries.

Spike Lee actually talked about this chant recently on his Twitter, in reference to Prince, I believe.

Just become something is popular doesn't mean everyone has seen it. I've never seen Titanic (the Leo version), Avitar, Star Wars, and a lot of other stuff. I was more into martial arts movies when I was a kid. I've seen the Wizard Of Oz a couple of times on TV when I was little, but don't remember anything about it. I've seen The Wiz more.

And here's another jam that came a few years later that has the chant in it at the end, very much like way they did it in "The Wizard Of Oz"....

bow U don't know how long I've been looking for this song. It's completely obscure, but that O-wee-oh bit with the freestyle beat has been playing in my head for years, and I knew it was a song from back in the day, but I had no idea who sang it! T4p!

But it wasn't the entire movie either time. I still don't remember what was in it, or the "Oh-wee-oh" coming from it. If I watched The Wizard Of Oz today, it would be like seeing it for the 1st time, but I can recite dialogue from The Wiz. Your point is that somebody is supposed to have seen a movie because it is famous, and there's many famous movies I've never seen.

It's a pretty iconic part of the movie though. Paradied and used in commercials.

I watch little television, and when I do watch it, it's mostly PBS or the local rerun channel (Beverly Hillbillies, Sanford & Son, Flying Nun, A-Team, etc).

The Wizard of Oz has permeated essentially every cultural avenue there is since its major success. From colloquialisms (following the yellow brick road, wicked witch of the ___, there's no place like home) to music to television to the silver screen to art to politics to crime. While it may somehow be possible to completely avoid any and all references to The Wizard of Oz one would encounter in their daily, normal, everyday life, that person is woefully uninformed and shockingly ignorant.

Nope. Thats just your own perception.

I work in the Middle East right now(the Gulf) and many kids I tutor have absolutely no idea about Dorothy and the gang or the big brouhaha surrounding them. And I'm willing to put my rent money on the tabel that 3/4 of those kids are waaaaaaay more intelligent & informed than 1/2 of the people in this thread claim to be, combined at that.

I don't know why some people stubbornly assume that every popular "western"(or in this case, American) phenomenon has to be always universally accepted.

what kind of tutor are you if you haven't taught the kids about the wizard of oz?

what kind of empty lives are they going to lead as a result of your edukashunable failings?

you should hang yourself in shame

those kids are going to grow up to be suicide bombers for allah, and kill themselves without knowing what's behind the emerald curtain. what kind of life is that you are leading children to?

Oh you don't have to worry about those kids wink they have more going for them than what your little demented fear and ignorant infested little cooped up cave you live in could offer. Thanks for the sincere sentiment and the slapstick comedy though thumbs up!
