The 3 year marriage of Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, is over, the couple's rep confirms to PEOPLE.

"After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to file for divorce," the pair said through a spokesperson. "This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration. We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further."

According to TMZ, the divorce documents were filed in L.A. Superior Court, with Knowles, 29, citing "irreconcilable differences."

In the court papers, which were signed by Knowles on Thursday and filed on Friday, it says the couple's date of separation is to be determined.

Knowles, one of the most successful female singers of her era and Jay-Z, 41, recently named the richest hip-hop artist in the business married in April 2008. Monday would have marked the couples 3rd anniversary.

The couple had been linked since early 2002, when they were spotted kissing at a New York nightclub.
