You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I had the same problem, would need at least 5. But to be compliant, and after much thought, my top 3 would be:

  1. Dream Maker
  2. Hollywood
  3. Bustin' Out (On Funk)

#3 hmmm Is that the one that goes " la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la ..." It has a lot of lalas in it with a strong horn section. I swear I don't think I've heard this song in it's entirety yet.

Cold Blooded

Super Freak

Very unoriginal choices, but without these tracks I wouldn't be the funky individual that I am today.

I could have just as easily copied DesireeNevermind or Andy's list and it would also work for me.

I like mostly all of Ricks uptempo stuff

You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

I love the adlib at the end of that line, I always make sure to repeat it or lipsync when It comes around

1. Below the Funk (Pass the J)--it's too damn cold and funky!

2. Gettin' It On (In The Sunshine) Reprise--gon' roll you around and around and around, [I have no idea what he's singing here, but it rocks!] Wasted half a joint. Gimme my guitar. [Acoustic, ad lib jam]

3. Call Me Up--Hello, may I speak to Rick James, please? The timbale solo @ 2:50 is bonkers as is the whole song!

Choosing 3 is impossible, but that was fun.

Me too. I've heard that song 2 million times over the years & still LOVE goin "So...take THAT" right along with Rick on that jam.

As for my top 3: (if I can only pick 3)

Mary Jane

You & I

Little Runaway (Off Stone City's debut)

(tie for third, "Below The Funk (Pass The J)"

Co-Sign on "Gettin It On". A few moments that SOUND like it FELT to be around Rick in those days. Always loved that lil track.

I'm just glad I was a fan of his BEFORE that song ever came out. I believe that's a large part of how I was able to appreciate everything that came after, even the two albums following his release from Folsom (each of which contain some of my favorite songs of his).

I could easily pick a dozen top favorites, and still have trouble deciding which one's to leave off.

nod I'm only realizing now that it wasn't. Unbelievable (I played it enough to have been a single though, lol). I just ran a quick check; doesn't seem to be on any of his "Greatest Hits" or "Anthology" discs either. That's why you can't trust those sets; they leave off gems like "Call Me Up".
