Chaka Khan - Be Bop Medley (Hot House/East of Suez/Epistrophy/Yardbird Suite/Con Alma/Giant Steps)
This won her the first solo Grammy of her career.
I couldn't stop playing this today...

I remember first coming across that song on one of her Greatest Hits CDs and playing it repeatedly.

Tour de force song.
Jazz legend Betty Carter tipped her hat to Chaka for that performance.

There was always shade thrown at Chaka for some reason. I think the fact that they didn't do this made them more jealous.

She would rather pay two buckets of blood or give up her cruises to the burger stands than to give anything with vagina between its legs a compliment.
Somebody ask her, who does she listen to(as far as her female peers were concerned) and she replied by saying that HER KIDS like Chaka
But Patti LaBelle & Dionne Warwick weren't shy about singing Chaka's praises.

It's fake gymnastics. It's like shes just jumping up and down while the set behind her is moving. Trying to give the impression that she's running a marathon. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Um - wow ... even without her lead vocal, those background vocals she laid down are pretty intense, dynamic and still spot on.

What you feel about the entire Chaka Khan album?

Tearin it Up - Classic vocals. Love the chorus.
Slow Dancin - Ok, I danced a solo dance to Superfreak for the talent contest when I was in the 6th grade. What do you think I think about this song? If I smile at you, would you walk away? Would you have this dance with me?
Best in the West - W. T. F? I don't know, there is something about this song as a concept that draws me to it. Did you ever see Lust in the Dust? I always picture Chaka as Margarita Ventura when I hear this song
Got to Be there - This is pretty generic to me. Not too plussed by it. OK, I do love the wailing This song gets pretty interesting towards the middle and the end. But I really have to fight through the beginning because like I said I do love the wailing
Be Bop - OK, I listened to this fully and I still feel the same If Chaka ever took acid, this is proof The vocalling at 2:39 are the most interesting thing to me about this song but that one piece doesn't make up for the fact I think this song is an atrocious mess.
Twisted - Y E S This song is amazing. Abstolute amazing. When you put the other material up against this song it exposes the weakness of those other tracks. This song is brilliant.
So Not to Worry - This song is kind of average to me. It sounds good, nice music good vocals but it doesn't really stand out to me.
Pass it On - This song is the Jam! So Rufushish I love this song.
Overall I give this a B and only because of Slow Dancin, Twisted and Pass it on. If those songs were as listless as the others this would get a D. It's not an album I listen to often in its entirety but for you and for this thread I just did

If "Pass It On" has the feeling of being "Rufusish" that's because Tony Maiden and close Rufus collaborator Lalomie Washburn wrote it lol and Tony is on the talk box in this one hahaha I love that song.

This is one of Chaka's most brilliant performances! She definately earned that Best Arrangement With Vocal Grammy for it! "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Richard, I think your judgement went to lunch on this one, dahling
Her enthusiasm in this song alone makes the song brilliant to me. Its like she's saying to her critics "You thought I was your average R&B siren, didn't you? Think AGAIN!". And the background vocals are one of her BEST per4mances, many people rightfully give her praise for her wailing, but this song showcased what a mad & underrated vocals arranger she is, to ME this is what coined the phrase "wall of sounds".
Another thing, the song is also a perfect showcase of her "horn like" singing, I'm not talking about scatting here, but the singing alongside the phrases that came out of the horns that played those songs originally,,,,Dizzy & Bird are likely the case.
You have to listen to the original recordings of those songs by Dizzy & Bird and then compare them to her singing, you'll be astonished by what you just heard. This is why I said its a tour-de-force performance.
EDIT: The song is also proof to those who won't admit that the human voice ISN'T an instrument. [Edited 8/31/10 16:44pm]

I'll help the boy out since he doesn't seem to understand Chaka's love of everything JAZZ.

East of Suez:

You know what's amazing about the song and her version of "A Night in Tunisia" ("And the Melody Still Lingers On") is that she wrote lyrics for both. I love the improvisational lyrics she used for "Be Bop Medley".

And to be honest Richard, if Chaka ever heard you say you thought that shit was corny, she'd slap the Chaka lips tattoo out your chest.

I love her live stylings when it comes to all this. I have been non-plussed about any of her ventures off in this area. It's what she fought to go solo over and Classikahn is a piece of shit and Echoes aint too far behind. I'll give it to her that she's at least not holding back but that is my issue with all of this part of her work, she's lazy about it and it sounds uninspired and generic, not like when she goes off live. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Well Richard you KNOW there's a difference between the studio and live performances. Of course to you she may sound uninspired and generic but guess is if we had a chance to do something like that we would flub at the first times we try it and give it up.
This ain't like an easy thing to do. To some jazz music is "lazy"... I don't think it is.

Oh I totally appreciate Jazz. I want her to BRING. IT. It's Like Prince's covers of BBGW and LLLMILY, it's like he held back out of deference. Sorry, if you can kick someone's ass because you have that much talent, it's not blasphemy to kick their ass by just doing what you naturally do!
I can't stand the music for this song. It bothers me. It reminds me of something you should hear in a sex dungeon [Edited 8/31/10 18:22pm] 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740
