Nneka - The Nigerian hip hop star hailed as the next big thing (CNN)

I started listening to Nneka when someone posted the video to her song The Uncomfortable Truth here a few months ago. Her albums are good. People often make a comparison to Lauryn Hill, but I think maybe the UK's Ms. Dynamite or Neneh Cherry gets closer to what she sounds like. (Her vocal style reminds me a lot of the latter, actually.)

This feature showed up on CNN's African Voices strand, showcasing her music for a global audience. Good to see her getting some recognition and airtime! biggrin

'Walking' and 'Heartbeat' are so great. I want to buy her album for about half a year now but I'm putting it off constantly for some reason. And yes she does remind me of Neneh too

nod

The Nigerian accent and slight sense of melancholy (about our collective spiritual and political condition, of all things!) only adds to it for me. batting eyes

Seems that what she's been promoting recently, Concrete Jungle, is a compilation of cuts from her previous two albums, Victim of Truth and No Longer at Ease -- as a move to 'break' her in the US, I guess. They're both worth picking up individually, though, I reckon (if they're not daftly overpriced as imports). There's a box set, To and Fro, out there, that includes both of them plus a disc of other stuff (live tracks, videos, etc), which is probably the ideal way to go.

I discovered Nneka on StumbleUpon a few months back and I love her music and her vibe. She's definitely going places.

My Nneka post on here had a tepid response. I keep dropping new artists and MONTHS later they surface on the org like they materialized out of thin air. People are selective about WHO tells them about new music, but whateva. 2elijah, jiorjios, KoolEaze and a few others peeped her.

It just reaffirms what I have said MANY times on here:

People on the org always say there is no good new music. Thats because its easier to complain about it than to look for it.

Yeah, it was your post with the video for The Uncomfortable Truth that I mentioned. Cheers for the recommendation! thumbs up! I was mainly pointing people to the CNN feature that just went up last week, but I guess the title of that does misleadingly make it sound like my post is an intro to her music.

Keep posting 'em, Knighty! (And any details of just where exactly they make women like Nneka will be gladly received too......) batting eyes

Just listened to some of her tracks. Her voice sounds like Randy Crawford's. And she kinda resembles Angelina Jolie.

In the songs I've listened to, I don't hear Hip-Hop shrug, but she could definitely be a Reggae star.
