Man you beat me to the punch. I've been meaning to start a Lawrence Hilton Jacobs appreciation thread for the last few weeks. Lawerence was a pioneer back in the day.
From Coolie High, to playing the son in that movie with Diane Carrol and James Earl Jones, to Welcome Back Carter. He did a lot of "Chitlin Circuit" plays before Tyler Perry came along and monopolized them all. Obviosly he played Joe Jackson. Brother was very very active back in the day. His very early career rivaled that of Laurence Fishburne (prior to him playing Morpheus). I really was digging his acting. Wonder what happened to him, and how is he making ends meet now?
Good thread. I didn't even realize that he sang. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Kind of sounds like a mix between David Ruffin and Jermaine Jackson. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Come on, y'all! This is from imdb. He's actually listed for about 68 roles (the Joe Jackson role is in that listing) and 20 appearances as himself. Really quite a career so far.....
Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs was born in New York City. He is one of nine children born to Hilton and Clothilda Jacobs. Larry, as his family and friends call him, attended public schools in New York City, so he has first-hand knowledge of what it is like to be a student in a big-city high school like the one pictured on "Welcome Back, Kotter." After high school, Larry worked at an odd assortment of jobs before turning to acting. First, he was a delivery boy, then a florist, then a messenger boy, and then a stock boy in a department store. His first "real important job," as he puts it, was as a freelance artist and package designer. This introduction to the world of the arts made up for all of the menial jobs he had performed while waiting to find himself. While working as an artist, Larry became interested in acting and began studying at Al Fann's Theatrical School and then with the Negro Emsemble Company. These are two all-black acting companies which produce experimental plays in New York City. They also train promising young black actors in the performing arts. With these companies, Larry acted in such plays as "Cora's Second Cousin," "The Dean," "What the Wine Sellers Buy," "Mask in Black," and "The Exterminator." None of these productions made him famous, but they did bring hm to the attention of film casting directors. He was given parts in the movies "Claudine" and "Cooley High." "Cooley High" was Larry's big breakthrough in show business. It was because of this film that he was given his 'Boom Boom Washington' role on "Welcome Back, Kotter." He also had two important roles in major made-for-television features, "The Sojourner" and the tremendously popular "Roots." Besides acting, Larry also sings, plays the piano and writes music.

Here's a piece from Rick's book:
"I ran into my good buddy Herbie Hancock. We began to get fucked up on tequila. By the time I went onstage I was blitzed. I told Herbie he should come up and play. All was well for a minute. I was excited about playing with him onstage. All the sudden I was out cold. I had fallen through a hole on the stage. The next thing I remember was this incredible pain through my ribs. I was pulled out and carried across stage through the back. Looking up all I saw were anxious faces of the people, including Lawrence Hilton Jacobs from 'Welcome Back Kotter'. A few years back I had lent Lawrence thirty thousand dollars and he had never repaid me-the stinking motherfucker. I was groaning with agony but when I saw his face I wanted to jump up and smack the motherfucker. He still hasn't repaid me".

@shortrini I didn't know 'Fly Away' was the single. It's a great song.
@LittlleBlueCorvette, I also like Love and Understanding is the answer.
Even though the self-titled album is well-crafted, I can understand how his album didn't rise to the top. It seems that so many people were creating records in the 70s that not everyone was able to get a 'breakthrough' effect.

4 years ago, he was living in the West Adams district in L.A., in an apartment with his mom, still trying to get his Hollywood hustle on. You can call me "ROC" for short

Yep, this chick I was dating said he stayed there beneath her apartment. Then I saw him one day. She said he would try and holler at her but then stopped once he saw I was coming around. She moved from there, so I don't know if he's still there. You can call me "ROC" for short

Wow! that is so sad. It reminds of Marvin Gaye who stayed near there with his parents. Before his Daddy murdered him. I hate when entertainers have been successful but lose it all. Very sad. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. Damn! That IS sad...and it happens way too often. It shouldn't--to someone who has had a career as successful as his appeared to be. Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.
