He surely did. I still laugh at him in "She's Gotta Have It". He was looking like a pimp then.

The look he gave Eddie was hot currency. The "you aint me" speech Eddie gave him was priceless. lol

And yeah about that look he gave Eddie. Lord that scene was sad though. Funny thing about it that was Michael Wright's actual voice when he was singing in that scene. I think Junior Marvin (of the Dells) did his live performance parts.

Is that Kasi Lemons having a fire crotch moment during the "House of Love" performance? Sure looks like her. She was yelling "go home" and 2 minutes later she was in love and faint

According to Robert, he originally wanted to do a comedy based on soul groups but the Dells, who was asked to supervise the direction of the music, told him that the times in soul groups were more serious than that so Robert basically based the film on the lives of the Temptations with the Dells mixed in it. I wonder what much of it was based on the Dells though...

To be honest besides from the "Heart is a House for Love" performance and Eddie Kane's fall from grace, my favorite scene in the whole movie has to be when Eddie and Flash argued and Eddie, drunk, barked at Flash for "trying to take my spot".

I can still remember that scene.

Flash: "Jimmy you're doing a wonderful job with the Heartbeats..."
Jimmy: "You're late again, Eddie!"
Eddie: "(chuckles) Naw naw naw naw... See Jimmy? I know what you're tryna do. But you ain't gonna do it. (chuckles) See Big Red done pull my coattail to you a long, long time ago."
Jimmy: "That's bullshit, Eddie."
Eddie: "(scoffs)"
Jimmy: "You're talking crazy, man. (walks away)"
Eddie: "Yeah I'm crazier than a muthafuckin' fox. (turns to Flash) And you. I can see through your jive ass like glass, nigga."
Flash: "Eddie, man, you got it all wrong."
Eddie: "Stealin' my moves, my style, nigga you even tryna riff like me!"
Flash: "(looks over) Hey man why don't you get your boy out here and detox him?"
Eddie: "You want my spot, Flash, hmm? Scum-dwellin', scum-suckin', slug-ass mothafucka! (Flash slams door in Eddie's face) (laughs) You want my spot, Flash?! Huh?! Well you ain't gonna get it 'cause you ain't got it! (hits door with shoulder and leaves)"

Well I read it in Jet. lol Robert wanted to do the same thing to "The Five Heartbeats" the same thing he did with "Hollywood Shuffle" but the Dells advised him not to, his words. So in a way it's like the male version of Dreamgirls.

Aside from the musical performances, my fav scenes were with Big Red. Dude was representing every crooked record exec there ever was.

Oh lord the balcony scene with Big Red and Bird!!!

Bird is like "I need to talk to you."
Red is like "My office hours are from 9 to 5"
Bird is like "I need to talk to you about my royalties and how you keep your books!"

Then Big Red just pops his ass and gets to boot kickin'! You don't threaten no gangster especially when you're by yourself and he has all his thug boys around! What was Bird thinking?

Red says "Open up the gatdamn window" and his boys take Bird out to the balcony and dangle his ass over the rail. His pants split but there was like no dick or balls or even underwear. hmmm That was strange.

My other favorite scene is when Eleanor (Jimmy's wife) finally gives it to Big Red after he had the nerve to show up at Jimmy's funeral after Jimmy was killed by Big Red's henchmen (you could hear gun shots after the truck hits Jimmy) and Big Red trying to console her saying "I'm here for you, you shouldn't be left alone, maybe sometime..." then she hits him in the shoulder and hisses, "how dare you come here...you disrespected my husband..." then yells "GET OUT now." I cried during that scene and shook my head at the same time because I know how cold Big Red was.

Another favorite part is when Jimmy confronts Big Red about Big Red trying to get Eddie out of the Heartbeats for a solo deal.

Eddie and the other Heartbeats have a fight after Jimmy's funeral with Dresser whupping Eddie for him thinking he played a part in Jimmy's death and Eddie crying, flatly denying it.

Dresser: "TELL 'EM EDDIE! TELL 'EM ABOUT YOUR ROLE IN JIMMY'S ACCIDENT! TELL 'EM ABOUT YOUR DEAL WITH THAT RED SUMMABITCH!" TELL 'EM!"
Eddie: "Oh God I didn't know bawl "

Dresser was initially held back by Choirboy, JT and Eddie until Dresser screamed those words.

Oh yeah and that scene with Bird and Big Red is an instant classic.

But no Desiree you forget the cool thing that Bird said right before getting his ass whupped.

Just as Big Red explains, "My office hours are from 9 to 5.", Bird shouts:

"FUCK your office hours, I need to talk to you right now, mothaFUCKA!" That's when Big Red knocks him to the ground and his voice goes up three octaves.

By the end Red's hair's a conky mess and he slyly tells Bird about his office hours, then Bird, who's obviously weeping, "nine to five cry " lol

I think Leon and Harry Lennix was the only ones of the actors who could actually sing. Don't know about Robert or Tico Wells (Choirboy) but I know Michael's vocals were lipped.

Oddly enough Leon was acting just like Eddie Kane in the Temptations film when he played David Ruffin. That was odd. lol

Man I love that performance of "Back In The Middle" I think it was called. About the time when they were getting into a disco type feel. Duck,er uh Robert, looked fake as hell with that keyboard.

Why does the guy who played Eddie (Michael Wright) always play a crackhead or a drug dealer???

He did so in the following movies/TV shows:

The Principal
The Five Heartbeats
Sugar Hill
Money Talks
OZ
Bone & Blood

That's a good fuckin' question. He's either a crack head or a gang member. Maybe I've seen him play a cop like once. confused

You saw his attempt to mack at someone? lol

You know there IS something comical about that scene when they were singing the song.

The timeline had it in 1972...everyone in Afros and shit.

YET...the music sounds 1982-ish! WTF?! falloff I just love how JT came strutting in like "this some bullshit". lol

Yeah David probably did. lol The Tempts DID had to stop David from "bumrushing" their early shows with Dennis. They did this right before releasing "Cloud Nine". lol

You should've seen when he did "Psychedelic Shack". They said Richard Street had a hard time singing parts for him. They had to turn the light off on Paul so people wouldn't notice how fucked up he was. While some parts of The Temptations' film was fictionalized, that really took place.

"There's two people I'd like to thank, my fiancee and my brother (JT is so damn clueless that he's actually smiling but the fiancee knew what Duck was talking about)...My brother, he's still the same selfish MUTHAFUCKA SINCE WE WERE KIDS!!!"
JT: "Don't do this here, what are you talking about?"

Duck was actually snooping on the girl and saw her with JT, then he and Choirboy talked about it. His fiancee knew that Duck knew but JT was trying to keep it from him, oddly enough. He stopped talking to JT for years until Eddie told him to come see him. Ironically enough when JT and Duck reconciled, JT had married and one of his children was named after Duck.

I cried a bit when JT's daughter yelled at young Duck, "Duck you heard what Daddy said! Won't you get over here, Duck?"

Eddie: "I heard what went down between you and JT."
Duck: "Naw I ain't got nothing to say to JT"
Eddie: Just listen man, everybody makes mistakes. I should know. Give him a call"

That scene alone is what made me fall in love with Eddie and the movie itself. Though Eddie had issues with insecurity (feeling like his father never really accepted him) and just flat out made bad decisions (that whole shit with Big Red was awful) he never acted like he was stuck up or was above the group (like Flash did). And remember when Dresser got his girlfriend (who later became his wife) pregnant and Big Red gave him the number to an abortion doctor..it was EDDIE who told him "didn't you just get finished saying how you loved her more than anything in the world?"...then Dresser looks pitiful and confused, Eddie then balls up that napkin with the number on it and he and Duck give him some money (probably the last dollars they had on them at the time). Now that was some real friendship there. Deep down, Eddie was really a great person who had horrible demons to conquer within himself.

That was odd. lol

Robert can sing. He sung with Howard Hewitt on Partners in Crime.

I don't know...when this film came out all those years ago folk were talking about this supposed deleted scene. I was like eek Maybe it's an urban legend but hot damn, if it's true it should have been in the movie. It kind of makes sense because I always wondered why JT was so stuck on this chick and adamant about her not marrying Duck. So he tapped her ass...so what? She'd be just another chick right?

Since y'all said this was originally supposed to be a comedy, I wonder what the original cast would have looked like.

Obvious Robert and Keenen but I wonder it the other spots would have been filled by the Black Pack members Arsenio, Eddie Murphy and Paul Mooney? Would have been great.

Yeah I think he was planning a different cast, and he originally wasn't going to be in it, but that all changed when he began to hear stories from those who lived during that time period, that's when he changed it from a comedy to a musical film.

Other interesting details about the Five Heartbeats:

Though the timeline starts off in 1965, several of the songs played during their early years were Delfonics recordings from 1968-1970! lol

Anyone else notice that? lol

There was some Four Tops songs played that was in the right time period though ("Shake Me, "Wake Me (When It's Over)" and "It's the Same Ole Song" though by the end of that song, the timeline speeds to 1968).

NOW THAT WAS FUNNY! That scene was actually hilarious when people threw stuff at them, especially Choirboy. But as funny as it was when the film was made, that actually happened at the Apollo Theater. And Big Red actually tricked people to dissing the Heartbeats even before they came onstage when they went against Bird and the Midnight Falcons. lol After Duck threw dude off the piano bench, the audience's moods changed drastically after Eddie opened his soulful voice. I love when his mother is going "YES" in the audience and his dad is like nod . lol

BTW, what the fuck happened to Bobby???

At the beginning, he's running with Eddie after the poker game, gets shot in the leg, and we don't hear from the Negro again!!!

That was a big, gigantic ass, Pink Elephant sized plot hole!!!

Why did he stop performing with the Heartbeats???

Was Eddie's performance at the talent show so great that they fired Bobby off-screen???

Did he quit after being shot in the leg and therefore, he wasn't able to dance???

nod Yeah I wanted to add that. His legs got fucked up so obviously why would they use him? lol

Plus they were already having a problem with him anyway, Duck was beyond pissed:

Duck: "Bobby's not here?! Why does he keep doing this shit? He knows I wrote all of the music in five-part harmony!?! FIVE-PART HARMONY!?!" lol

That just reminded me, the Dells originally had six members but cut to five because the guy didn't wanna be part of the group. lol But it wasn't because he got shot after cheating on a gambling game.

But how could have Eddie had a person who was "just there"? I don't know if that makes too much sense because if that was the case then why did he slide in the talent show singing? I mean sure they all looked shocked and confused once Eddie came in, well RAN in rather, but they sort of all fell into place. How in the world did Eddie know the words to the song then? I bet Eddie was like a shadow person for when Bobby didn't show up to gigs.

See I never thought that Duck was never technically in the group. But you right about the plot holes. Like it was never explained
1) What happened to Bobby? (although Timmy sure gave some good explanations for it)

2) How in the world did that stuck up girl (Tanya) all of a sudden seduce Duck into dating her and JT into fucking her?

3) Where did Babydoll go when she left Eddie? (That scene was classic when she laid him out all calm then left him sitting there looking stupid with the cocaine on the table)

4) What exactly was Eddie's role in Jimmy's death...specifically? They just gave like a broad explanation. You know he made some kind of deal with Big Red as far as his contract went("Eddie is the Heartbeats, all the other guys can be replaced...you know that Jimmy") but it seems like Eddie inadvertedly was involved with Jimmy's death in some way too...kind of like how Fredo was inadvertedly involved with the hit on his brother in "The Godfather". lol Just sayin'

5) How was Dresser the only one who found out about Eddie's deal "With that Red son of a bitch!!!!"???? It sure was funny when he was beating Eddie in that alley and then in the middle of it he fell all on top of him. lol

Now I actually found Eddie to be sexy...in SOME scenes. Like the scene where he was smoking a cigarette after Jimmy's death and Duck & JT went to see him to talk about how they were going to bring Big Red down....and the scene where he was walking outside and he yelled outside of Baby Doll's window "It's really happening baby" and then went to talk to his parents. Plus in the montage scene when they were getting famous and they were all at the table celebrating "The Crissy Affair" album...Eddie had a mustache and chin hair..almost a goatee...whew he was real sexy in that scene. razz

Okay I watched my 15th Anniversary DVD of the movie this past weekend and I never knew that there was some deleted scenes on there. Watched them, but they seemed like they were filmed with a home video camera and seemed more like outtakes than anything else. Anywho, there is a scene where all of them have to sing notes and I was surprised that Tico Wells (Choirboy) actually could really sing, he has a beautiful voice!!!! Now I'm left wondering if he actually sang all his parts or did he lip synch the live performances hmmm Who knows.
