Do Pat Bentar and/or Stevie Nicks Get The Credit They Deserve?

For being leaders within the female rock genre. I must confess to not knowing the history of rock as well as others but they cross my mind as the two that had the biggest sales and longest careers yet they tend to under appreciated by rock critics and pundits.

Now, I'm sorry but I just don't consider Tina, Aretha, Dionne and others as "rock" stars...They are pop or soul but did they really ever release straight rock? Tina pundits really irk me when they try to call her out as a rock star. She was straight up adult contemporary when she made it big on her own.

What say thee org? What's your take on all this. Educate me.

Very true but the bigger issue....ANN WILSON, this woman blows everyone away, never respected, her vocals never given credit, her band not given their due, and the sisters not given any credit for being great songwriters

I think they both get the props they deserve- both as important figures in the female rock scene, but not the headliners like Chrissie Hynde and Deborah Harry. The one who I feel is underrated is Joan Jett!

Did Joan Jett have major mainstream success though? And can Blondie be considered rock or was it genre busting pop?

Joan did have some mainstream success for awhile. But she's been totally ignored since about 1989.

Blondie definitely blurred genre lines, which is part of the reason why I love them so! But their first 4 albums (especially the first 2) are rock albums.

Joan Jett got some in the early '80s but after about 88-something, she didn't get so promoted. Blondie was a mixture. They could do new-wave, punk, rock, reggae, hip-hop, disco, etc.

Honestly i would call Joan one of the first indie artists to really breakthrough on her own, and never really conformed at any point in her career. The commercial peak for the most part was when she was with "columbia" because they pushed her and "ROCK" was in then.

I don't really relate sales to quality of material but I do repect Heart.
As a matter of fact, I did a post on my favorite Heart album (not their most popular)...

...Dog & Butterfly some time ago.

At the time, it ended up very close to where you'd find the locker of Davy Jones. confused

eh, Stevie Nicks gets plenty of credit, and she deserves it as both a performer & songwriter. Actually Christine McVie probably doesn't get the credit she deserves.

Pat Benetar? Not so sure about that.

I'd say Chrissie Hynde & Heart are definitely is more deserving as a proper rock singer/songwriter/musicians than Pat Benetar, who is pretty & has a great voice. In that vein, Linda Rondstadt might deserve credit as a pretty rock singer. But I don't think she or Pat really gave the world anything new.

I am not sure about Joan Jett. She is a rocker, true, but she always struck me as someone who I would never have noticed if she was not a hot girl. I never found her music to be very real. If she was a guy I'd say she was a poser. But I admit I only know a handful of her songs.

Joan Jett is the most real of all of them! She was the creative force behind The Runaways at only 15 years old, and she released a lot of music before becoming popular in the early 80s. She's still goin' strong, too!

Joan Armatrading really never got mainstream attention.

Aimee Mann got attention here & there, but I think she's been putting out really good songs for 20 years. And had I not been forced to listen to the second Til Tuesday album repeatedly, I never would have known how good it is.

Stevie Nicks does because she's part of Fleetwood Mac, but Pat Benatar(my girl) does not.

First off, Tina ALWAYS wanted to do rock songs. Go listen to everything BUT "What's Love Got To Do With It". Things like "1984", "Steel Claw", "I Might Have Been Queen", "Show Some Respect" are pure rock songs. She's always loved the rock n' roll, more than the R&B. Hell, she fucking taught Mick Jaggar how to dance! She's a fucking rock star to the core.

I don't care about Stevie Witchy Nicks. She's just ridiculous to me, and her voice is the same as to fingernails on a chalkboard, while biting into ice cream with your front teeth in a blizzard at the North Pole, while being fucked by a dried pineapple.

Pat Benatar has gotten some great praise over the years. She did a Crossroads with Martina McBride which was incredible. Both of those voices together, singing country and rock.....delicious! However, Pat could still due for some more credit. She doesn't quite get her named mentioned as much as others do, like Witchie Poo.

Definitely agree with Chrissie Hynde. She seemed very authentic.
Unique voice, didn't sound like anybody else.

Tina Turner is R&R. Forget the later material. It's in her voice.

Grace Slick & Janis Joplin (60s comtemporaries)

PAT BENATAR!!!!! worship i consider her and Tina Turner the queens of rock.

i don't think Pat gets the credit she deserves. she's been around forever, has a huge catalogue but people only associate her with her earlier works. and in the industry it doesn't seem like they acknowledge her."Innamorata" album was awesome, but grossly over looked. just saw her a few months ago and she was great!! one of my absolute favourites!!!! i can't think of many, if any female rock artists that are recognized today. Chrissie Hynde is awesome and overlooked. i completely agree. i enjoy some of Joan Jett's music and think she definitely deserves her 'props'. but i kind of get why she may have not made a huge mainstream impact. if that matters. Heart should absolutely get theirs as well. Stevie Nicks...eh..i have a hits collection by her but that's all i can stomach. she kind of irks me most of the time. and her later stuff has done nothing for me. i do enjoy her Fleetwood Mac stuff as well.

get it! thumbs up!
