My vote goes to The Carpenters. Tupac "Makaveli" Shakur (RIP 1971-1996) & Michael Jackson (RIP 1958-2009)
2 men that had their lives taken away the moment they were speaking out AND rebelling against the dark side of the music industry once too often.

The Carpenters I now present unto you an original person, one that is able to rationalize and make decisions that utilize intellectual significance. Yes, this person is on the endangered species list. - Patsheart April 2, 2009

What he said. I can think of two Carperter's songs I enjoy and even then I've got to limit it. In spite of the recent news, I'll still take The Mamas and The Papas any day. We are stardust. We are golden.

The one thing they couldn't do was covers of rock songs ("Beechwood 4-5789", "Please Mr. Postman", "Dancing in the Street", etc.) real well. Otherwise, they were OK, lol. I wanted to say neither and just say MAMA CASS and DENNY DOHERTY! John & Michelle were just for show. nWo (aka FUNK 3.0): bboy87 - timmy84 - muthafunka - littleBLUEcorvette - phunkdaddy - christopher

funny because i kinda started this thread trying to think of the two bands that would be the complete opposite of anything posted in this forum

I like both of them well enough, though I'm no expert on either band. I have one greatest hits album from each. I actually happened to listen to the M&P comp yesterday, and I genuinely enjoyed every track on it. I certainly couldn't say the same thing about the Carpenters compilation I have, but I do think their best songs achieve a sort of easy-listening genius. Karen Carpenter's vocals were always very clear, dry & understated; I think that's the quality that raised them above the rest of the 70s-era MOR acts. Most economic fallacies derive from the tendency to assume that there is a fixed pie, that one party can gain only at the expense of another.
