Maxwell- Black Summers' Night concert littlemissG said: I saw Maxwell at the Joe Louis Arena on Saturday with my friend Maria. Maria is a total fan girl and got us $175 seats after I told her I'll pay for a $65-$80 seat!! I don't even shell that much out for Prince! She picked up the difference (She had better).
It started over an hour late, but it was worth it. It was a great show! Chrisette Michele, and Robin Thicke opened, but they had to shorten their sets. Poor Chrisette only got three songs, and Robin did his hits plus a MJ tribute of Pretty Young Thing. Both were wonderful. Maxwell came out and went right in to his new album, then some of his hits. The man can move like Prince in his prime, and the man is S-E-X-Y!! He apologized for being hoarse, but he sung his little heart out. He spared no expense on tour: two large video screens, stage with a runway and trapdoors that he took full advantage of with his choregraphy. There was incense-like smoke blowing during most of the show and the arena had the feel of a small club. He really interacts with his mostly female audience, no surprise there. During one song he laid near the edge of the stage and sung while fans rubbed his face and what the could reach of his trim toned body! Maria was mad because he missed his hand twice when he worked the edge of the stage Now I'm waiting to see what Mr. Prince is going to do on his next tour. I think he going to have to step up his game after Maxwell's tour. I might even cough up $175 to see it. [Edited 9/29/09 7:08am] No More Haters on the Internet.

Yes, my sister came in from out of town soley for this show and Maxwell kissed her hand. I got the full report similar to yours, thanks tho! "ask yourself what's more important: him, or the broken pieces of your heart."

Cool looking to see him in london next month but was unsure how he would fill the stage but it's good to hear he moves around and mixes the old with the new ! Not a big fan of the new stuff! i was at the Joe Louis show with too and I only own Embrya by Maxwell (pretty familiar with the other stuff tho) and i was thoroughly impressed. everyone felt the Joe was the wrong venue for this tour, but he pulled it off despite it being only 1/2 to 3/4 full. the production was first rate and rivals the best shows i've seen. Would've like to have seen a couple more tracks from Embrya like These Things (he could've emerged from one of the "islands" on the stage and gave that a real nice acoustic treatment with his guitarist) and Cococure. the word of mouth for this tour will be excellent and it should do well. Maxwell is becoming a male Sade.

I saw Maxwell at the Joe too. I was one of the people that was really pissed off about him doing an arena tour. I felt he should have done a theater tour. I really did not think he could pull it off.

Yeah I was also in the house at the Joe when my boy did his thing. Although the arena wasn't exactly full, I'd have to say it was one of the best concerts I'd gone to in recent memory. I'm only familiar with Maxwell's performances via TV and Youtube, but like everyone else I was so amazed (and surprised) to know how great of a performer he is. Hell, I'm ready for the next tour already, lol

He's one of the saviours of music in the past 10 years. I'm glad he's back. I can't wait for the next two albums in 2010 and 2011. Ernest L Sewell, IV

I saw Maxwell at Madison Square Garden on the 28th and was very impressed with the stage production. The video filming was excellent--crisp mostly black and white close-ups of him on two huge screens on each side of the stage that sometimes split into four smaller vertical panels. The center part of the stage extended out into a Y-shape and for "Til The Cops Come Knockin'" two large red siren lights were spinning on each end. Very cool.

Boy was I wrong. OMG...not only did he pull it off but he almost rivaled my main man Prince. I had not clue about Maxwell as a performer. Not only can he sing, but the man can dance his ass off. I thought I was going to lose it when he broke out with the splits. As littlemissG mentioned, his voice did get hoarse, but he still sounded good, even when he had to sing some of his falsetto sung songs in his natural voice He put on one hell of a show. Te production was top-notched...from the band, choreography, the Y shaped catwalk, the screens...everything was pure perfection. And that man is just too damn sexy... I'm looking foward to seeing what he does at an outdoor venue on the 17th. I saw him last year at the Paramount Theater, and I generally prefer smaller venues like that for solo artists. Your review is getting me excited. Thanks!

Does his voice hold up live? Even on the albums I sometimes have doubts about his singing. I'm the one sent to kiss you out the mood you've slipped into.

Ive seen him 4 times, and his voice has been excellent 3 times and just good once. The "good" performance was at the end of a tour when as one could expect, he'd grown a bit hoarse. Though, I just read a couple of reviews of his recent show in Toronto and there were comments on him already being hoarse. I think this touring has been a bit much for him, but hope he will get his vocal strength back. http://jam.canoe.ca/Music...6-sun.html http://www.eyeweekly.com/...icle/73031

Can anyone recall the name of the song he sung when the dancing female silhouettes were displayed on the screens/backdrop?

[Edited 10/3/09 15:20pm] It might have been the "Playing Possum" song. It was very slow wasn't it? "Who gonna check me boo?" Boriqua1130 said: It's never too late, to be "Experienced"

[Edited 10/3/09 15:20pm] It might have been the "Playing Possum" song. It was very slow wasn't it? Yes, it was slow, but I can't recall if it was a song from the new album or from one of his older ones. I do know that the silhouettes were visually stunning and the song went perfect with the display. At first, I thought it was actually 2 women dancing behind a curtain, then I realized that it was some kind of digital display...lol [Edited 10/3/09 16:57pm]

I'm pretty sure it was "Playing Possum" if not it could have "cold" but I put my money on "Playing Possum". "Who gonna check me boo?" Boriqua1130 said: It's never too late, to be "Experienced"

It's an interesting statement you've made. First let me say that your doubts are misplaced. The man can sing like a MFer live. Second, the bigger thing that your statement made me think about was.....something I'm going to create a new post about in Music: Non-Prince. But yes....he can sing. Don't be fooled. He has a following for a reason. Ernest L Sewell, IV

One of my co-workers went to see that show and absolutely loved it. I found out about it too late when he was here in NYC last week. Education, the greatest weapon

I was so surprised how Maxi's concert was very "top of the line". He did stuff that I've never seen Prince do on stage. And I do agree, Prince needs to check out Maxi's concert so he can set a new standard and step up his game "Who gonna check me boo?" Boriqua1130 said: It's never too late, to be "Experienced"

And I do agree, Prince needs to check out Maxi's concert so he can set a new standard and step up his game Wow, this is a huge compliment to Maxwell. I agree that Maxwell puts on a GREAT show, but he is not in Prince's league in terms of musicianship, charisma or showmanship. Prince is, to me, arguably the greatest live entertainer alive - especially now that MJ has passed. Maxwell's prime is top notch, but Prince's prime was in another stratosphere musically not to mention with respect to dancing, wardrobe or set design. Even today, as a 50-something performer, he blows the competition away with his musicianship. Prince's last arena tour, Musicology, might not have been big on theatrics, but musically it was AMAZING. I don't know any performer who is musically on that level, and for me the music is first and foremost above dancing and set design. I don't want to take anything away from Maxwell, but I don't think Prince should be looking for performance tips from him. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...
