Holiday's voice and rendition is so unique and iconic that it's kind of pointless to compare any other version to hers. That said I love J-Hud and think she did an awesome job. Effa last row of the balcony - Holiday was sangin' to the lobby!

Effa last row of the balcony - Holiday was sangin' to the lobby! You know??? "And I Am Telling You" is like the Black "Everything's Coming Up Roses". It's insane and desperate and brings down the house and a single performer defines the entire production.

I don't know if a lot of people ever compare the two. But I find a LOT of similarity between them. Even the whole format and how they're performed.

I like JHud's version for the same reason I like Whitney's ova chaka-
If you have to do something kicking and screaming and tearing down others with your "self love" words- maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

But yeah Ms. Hudson did a great job with it. Her version had more of an R&B punch than the original (which was definitely more Broadway pop-esque to me). nWo (aka FUNK 3.0): bboy87 - timmy84 - muthafunka - littleBLUEcorvette - phunkdaddy - christopher

I actually remember watching the Tony awards on TV and seeing Jennifer Holiday back in 82. I remember being blown away by her voice and the next's day at school that's what all the girls could talk about. And When the groove is dead and gone, you know that love survives and we can rock forever. R.I.P Michael.

Not to mention Hudson's version has a certain tenderness in the beginning that Holliday's lacks. Holliday (to me anyway) starts attacking the song in the beginning. It's like the Broadway version had her beating the shit out of him, while Hudson's version had the character upset and building up her anger. In Holliday's stage performance, you see her build up, but as a listener, it sounds like she's ready to kick his ass and make him stay.
