SHOWDOWN: Alien Sex Fiend vs. Fields Of The Nephilim

Where my org goths at?

Both were big names in the British goth scene in the 80s, but had vastly different styles.



Alien Sex Fiend injected a lot of humor into their lyrics and image (how can you not be funny with a name like Alien Sex Fiend) and musically they sounded like zombies from outer space.



Fields of The Nephilim on the other hand took themselves a lot more seriously and were strongly influenced by spaghetti westerns and Ennio Morricone.

I like both but a little Alien Sex Fiend goes a long way since their music has not evolved that much over the course of their career while The Nephilim, driven by frontman Carl McCoy's perfectionism, became more and more majestic and epic with each release. I have every Nephilim album (not that there are many), but only a handful of ASF records.

I don't expect this thread to be very popular.

I really hope there are no goths here. Unfunky wierdos.

I always like the garden variety pop star versions of Goth...No I'm not talking about that shit Evanescence band that claimed the goth mantel , but The Sisters of Mercy.


If I had to chose between those two I'd go with Fields of NappyDugout cause the vocals are more to my liking.



I also loved it when neo-Industrial synth bands were imitating goth (Every day is Halloween--ministry) or even when Depeche Mode took a stab at that shit (Blasphemous Rumors). I know purist are going to lambaste me for those examples, but hey--they play those songs in Goth clubs, so I can't be THAT far off the mark.


An interesting genre that never quite broke free from it's comic-book style appeal. Goth , though not as 'hot topic' as Emo never seems to be more than a circus act to those who aren't actually into the genre.

I was into it simply because they were my favorite dance clubs, but after awhile it sort of feels a wee bit camp.

Ah yes, the biggest goth band ever, the Sisters Of Mercy. When you get Meat Loaf producer, Jim Steinman to work on your records, you clearly are aiming for the stars. (Floodland is one of my favorite albums ever.) And with that success Andrew Eldritch achieved a popularity that he ultimately came to despise and has considered "goth" a four-letter word ever since.

Ministry and Depeche Mode do indeed have significant goth followings so I'm not going to tell you that you're wrong there. Hell, the late 90s/early 00s synthpop wave practically RULED goth clubs for awhile.

Goth will never be popular in the states. This country is way to conservative to embrace it the way the U.K. or Germany do/did.

Can't say i've heard too much of Alien Sex Fiend so notin a position to judge. Like me some Neph though - I think their early stuff (with some sax thrown in!) worked better than the ritualistic nonsense McCoy started churning out later.
