I'm happy to hear this, but I'll remain optimistically cautious. TWHMMTMOMD was pushed back like how many times? ________________

i'd rather not go to a show where the performer radiates hatred for the audience and her fans.

I've heard mixed reviews of her live shows, any thoughts from folks who have seen her in the past? Is she likely to cover any previous work or just new material?

Thanks. I think her live shows are amazing. She does mainly new- and yet-to-be-released material in concert, which I find exciting because she is never "going through the motions." I just saw her in DC 2 months ago and I'm thrilled to see her again in another 2 months! | |

They'd rather try to convince us to go see Beyonce's overrated happy ass! Orgnote me, maybe we can meet up in the D and enjoy the show Org style! Of course, I'm a Liberal! I'm an American, damn it!

Thanks. I've seen her live twice. Decent the first time; great the second. VERY capable bands, and her set lists have been a decent mix of released stuff and as-yet-unheard material. The first time (in Cleveland), I think she could have been a bit more demanding on the sound guys: Her bass was barely audible, but she seemed either not to notice or care. The second time (in Detroit), her mike was cranked -- and she thumped the $#@! out of that hall! As for her reputed "hatred" toward fans, Meshell is epileptic and quite sensitive to light. At most of her shows there are postings and repeated announcements to refrain from flash photography. Occasionally, the audience disregards it (or, as with the infamous Atlanta show, the house apparently forgets to communicate it)... and she will get pissed -- sometimes with no great effort to hide it -- and will even cut a show short. This sort of thing isn't typical of her, though. [Edited 8/15/09 19:35pm] ________________

This sort of thing isn't typical of her, though. [Edited 8/15/09 19:35pm] In my own list of 'top live shows i've seen in person', #1 is a Meshell show. (and there several other Meshell gigs in the mix within the list as well). her shows tend to be mostly new/unreleased songs thus the performances tend to be fresh, loose and raw. (which is just how i personally love live performances to be. I get bored and un-inspired with most artists overpolished/over-rehearsed/overproduced shows. With Meshell it is ALL about the music, and nothing else. So, if thats what's most important to you too then her show will deliver that for sure. She usually picks very strong band-mates who actively contribute a lot to the live experience (she doesn't just pick solid 'back up' players, she seems to instead go for musicians who have their own specific musical skill-set strengths and styles, but who share the same inspired passion for live collaborative 'in the moment' musical creation. They aren't afraid to take true musical chances live in person...and there is risk in that...but thats also where you can reap the most rewards musically speaking as well. That edgy 'unknown' energy is often palpable at her shows...and again is something i personally thrive on in live concerts.) stylistically you never know what you're going to get (again something i love about her shows). I've been to funktafied meshell shows, soul searching spiritually inspired meshell shows, jazzy groovy meshell shows, reggae dipped spacey meshell shows, headbanging rocked out punk infused meshell shows, and shows where theres a mix of a bunch of things...so you really have to go in with an open mind as far as 'style' is concerned. I tend to be the 'genre-less' type, meaning i dont have one particular genre of music that i listen to, so Meshells wide range of styles suits me perfectly. If you are open to multiple unexpected combinations of styles of music then Meshells shows should be for you. the Epileptic thing is serious...i've seen her literally collapse and pass out on stage due to flashes in the crowd. Its genuinely dangerous for her to perform when folks in the crowd are taking flash photos. I cant speak to every concert of course, but at least in some cases her performing with her back to the crowd/ eyes closed etc are situations where she's trying to make sure she doesnt fall risk to an epileptic incident caused by flash photography. Again, i cant speak for every show...because she definitely can be little firecracker for sure, for instance if the sound mix isnt right, she's absolutely not afraid to speak her mind. Her feelings will come across, good or bad happy or sad, no doubt about it. in a way though, that is what those of us who dig about her most...there is very little 'filter' with her. she is less like a typical 'talented performer putting on a perfect & dazzling show in every town' she is more like an 'extremely gifted & talented musician, composer & orchestrator nakedly sharing her creative expressions honestly with whoever will listen'. She's not afraid to take chances, make mistakes and explore uncharted musical areas...live onstage with everyone watching & listening... pretty much as real as it gets. so, if you're into that sort of thing, as i am, i think you'll most likely be musically satisfied with a live Meshell gig . After seeing her in Chicago last year, I would never see her again. It was like we weren't even there. She spoke mostly to her band and played with her back to us. plus she was over an hour late. I'm not buying the latest album either. God DAMN there are a lot of dumb motherfuckers walking around! - George Carlin
