He's one of my favorite guitarists - not because he's incredibly original or inventive - but because he played with such great technique and genuine passion. Wow!

SRV's brand of blues was just grittier than Prince's IMO. Not necessarily better. Just different.

From a more traditional blues standpoint, I'd say so. But overall, eh, P is my fav so i'll go with him.

Here's one of my favourite players, of a similar style:-
(NB bear with it - there's a good variety of styles throughout the clip, including some great jazz approx half way through)

This is not an exit

That's a great question. It's hard to tell - at first. SRV rarely strayed far from the blues and the pentatonic scale while Prince has shown solid guitarmanship in whatever genre he's playing at the moment. If it was a blues or rock jam, I'd take SRV. But in some cases, Prince would serve better. But after some thinking, I wonder if Prince is only a great guitar player if the context is his own music? I've never been impressed with his playing outside of that. And neither of them could match wits with a seasoned jazzer.

But in terms of overall guitar talent, SRV makes a greater impression. Prince was/is probably the better overall musical talent.

If you put them two on the same stage in a "cuttin heads" duel, the walls would sweat and they'd go to a draw. Much rather imagine them doin some music together just like we've all imagined how,if Jimi lived what would him and Prince sound like together
