Troop vs. New Edition

A lot of people use to compare Troop to New Edition but which group did you like better in regards to music, choreography and harmonies.

This is a hard pick comin from a fan of both groups lol. I gotta roll with New Edition bein that we watched them litterally go from "Boys To Men" so that makes it a bit more personal. Speakin for myself. anything I know about the mechanics of music I learned from Jam & Lewis and I'm proud to say that I grew up with "N.E. Heartbreak" ....

I like both group. But I vote for New Edition. Without them OR The Jacksons, there is no Troop, Hi-Five, New Kids On The Block, Boyz II Men AND Jodeci.

This comparison is REALLY lopsided. Troop was hot for like 2 albums in 88 and 89. Everything after that is not memorable. And please don't bring up that Deepa album from 1992. LOL

New Edition's Heart Break album >>>>> Troop's career

New Edition destroys any R&B group/band that came after them not named Tony Toni Tone or Mint Condition.

It may be REALLY lopsided in your opinion because NE has released more albums but I brought up the comparison because back in the day folks use to compare the two groups because folks thought they had similarities.

I don't know if NE destroyed any R&B group not named Tony Toni Tone or Mint Condition. I love New Edition but let's not forget that Boyz II Men gave them a run for their money especially when their 2nd album came out.

Love them both!

Music: New Edition (for longevity)
Choreography: Troop
Harmonies: Troop
MJ Impersonation: Troop's "All I Do Is Think of You" over N.E.'s "Candy Girl"
Covers: Troop's "All I Do Is Think of You" and "Sweet November" over N.E.'s "Earth Angel" and "Blue Moon"
Personalities: New Edition

Musically, it's a tough call. New Edition had more good songs because they were together longer, but I don't think they had a song as great as "Spread My Wings."

I disagree. Remember that outro after Crucial on Heartbreak? or Ralph channeling his inner Michael at the BET 25th anniversary? lol

I have to agree except for maybe the song part. I think "Can You Stand The Rain" maybe just as great as "Spread My Wings."

This true that they were compared back in the day in the late 80's, but that was for a very short period of time. Just look back at both of them now. Troop just doesn't compare. Troop does exceed them in certain categories, but its minimal.

As for Boyz II Men, NE >>> Boyz II Men. Boyz II Men were good but they sang the same old songs for the first two albums and people got tired of that sh1t by the third joint. They sang the same songs over the same ol' Babyface "1,2,3...1,2,3" drum pattern and songwriting (I'll Make Love, End Of The Road etc.).

"Can You Stand The Rain" >>> Troop

"Boys To Men" (the song) >> Boyz II Men (the group) LOL.

Really though, Boyz II Men came close, but no cigar. NE got 'em.

I enjoy both and think compliment each other. I think troop was much more involved with the writing and producing on most of the output so I give them props in the talent department. NE has a better career with many hits and a rabid fanbase. Atlantic records could have done a better job with troop since they seemed to more talented. I don't think anyone could name any of the members of Troop (except Steve), but everyone knew all the members of NE by the third album. smile

That's true regarding Boyz II Men's songs sounding the same. However, I think Boyz II Men may be more successful mainstream than NE. When I did an internship at a Today-like show in my area and both groups were coming on as guests, majority of my white peers KNEW Boyz II Men but didn't have a clue as to who New Edition was. And I think some of Boyz II Men's songs surpassed all of NE's. Heck, "End Of The Road" surpassed any NE song on the charts. But I do enjoy NE more, I just think Boyz II Men may be more successful mainstream wise.

And like someone said, I think Troop is more talented when it comes to harmonies and choreography but I don't know any of the names in Troop besides Steve and Allen, but I know every name in NE(Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Johnny and don't forget, Ralph) biggrin

New Edition. I will say that Troop had great choreography tho. NE just seemed to be more polished, had better ballads and they were quite handsome. Troop got hit with the ugly stick a little too hard.

oooh , got a thread idea. hmmm
