Ahmad Jamal - "Poinciana" (1958)

...

From "Live At The Pershing: But Not For Me" (1958)

smile Never get tired of this classic...I love the combination of Ahmad's playing,

Vernell Fournier's Drums, and Israel Crosby's bass...

I've got it myself. Good stuff. Regret not seeing him at the end of last year.

sad I haven't seen him in awhile--(well, not since the mid-80's...)

I saw Mr. Jamal 2 years go at Jazz Showcase in Chicago. I searched U-Tube and no one has uploaded a standard that's among Jamal's repertoire, "And We Were Lovers". If you get a chance, check-it-out.

YES!

Ahmad Jamal is one of my all time favourite jazz pianists.

I've seen him a few times. Brilliant, articulate, and plays with dynamics and bold accents.

Great article, and I agree with the writer---Thanks!!!!

I love Ramsey Lewis's comment:

"Everybody in Chicago loved Ahmad," Lewis recalls. "But I noticed, nationally, critics were slow to come around until Miles Davis came through town and made his remark about Ahmad being a major influence to him. Of course, at that point, all the reviewers and critics jumped on board. Musicians, we all looked at each other and said, 'Well, they're late, but at least they caught the train.' "

Oh yeah, great article. thumbs up! Mr. Evans was always quick to acknowledge Mr. Jamal impacted on how he played and thought about those keys on the piano.

P.S. I tried to download Jamal, "And We Were Lovers" but it was blocked by U-tube. I going to try something else and see if I can get it up.

I absolutely adore Jamal and what he brought to his music. I love how he can take even the most mundane standards and make them his own, vibrant creations. "Autumn Leaves" is generally pretty bland, but he completely transforms it into something incredible.

Nice. A lot of big name artists over the years have cited him as a major influence, though I never got around to checking him out myself. Might have to now after hearing this. Thanks!
