Ditto. She has a voice perfect for those sultry ballads.

She hits the right notes most of the time which is more than I can say for many of the "belters" that get high praises.

I've never understood people who think loud singing = good singing.

I thought 'Toya sounded her best on "Night Time Lover". People just didn't know what to do with her or Rebbie for some odd reason... Janet was smart with what she did, I have to say.

Yes.

I just don't always enjoy the way she uses her voice in some songs. I'm not a fan of her whispering.

That's why I'm a fan of her ballads on the "Rhythm Nation" and "janet" albums. nod

I like the sound of her voice very much. It's sexy, playful, fun and very feminine.

I think she has quite a lot of songs where her studio voice is very enjoyable.

Just that her live singing is nonexistant and lately she did many whispery tracks...

hey the latoya song is very nice!

As for Janet, I've always loved her voice when she uses it well, it's pretty, pleasant and soothing, and her range is very nice too. For the kind of music she does, if she sounded like whitney it would be very annoying to hear. Four words for you : How Will I Know

Can't Be Good is a good song on Discipline, but I don't think it's representative of her voice overall for a discussion like this, cause though she sounds good, she's sang better before. Have you heard ne yo's cover of this song? It sounds vocally stronger

She can carry a tune and tends to have a "sweet voice". She, in my opinion, is not what I would categorize as a vocalist.

Yeah the thing is that you dont have to have a "great voice and range" to be a good singer. Its what you do with you got that is important. I dont think Madonna has a good voice but she holds my interest because it fits her music, and thats not saying the music is bad, its not, its just that she isnt Aretha Franklin or Sarah Vaughan and we shouldnt expect every female, especially, to be that singer. I see this more with female singers than with males that we give passes to, we expect every female to have aretha like vocals where as male singers dont really have the bar raised that way.

So its not about voice and range, because we all know the acrobats out there in this american idol generation, but so many of these strong voices cant sing properly. And i know people cant get there heads around that notion, but its like a "great guitar player" that has speed and can do all sorts of things but at the end of the day all he is, is a show off with no depth.

She can sing well when she sings in the high range of her voice, but when she sings the low notes she sounds flat. Her vocal range is limited. I think she has one of those voices you either love or hate.

Exactly! That's why it always annoys me when people say, that Janet can't sing, when all they mean is, that she doesn't have a great voice like the acknowledged "great female singers"! She indeed can sing!
