Beyonce: Etta James changed my life

US POP RnB star Beyonce has admitted that playing the role of jazz legend Etta James changed her life.

Beyonce, who released her new album I Am Sasha Fierce, earlier this month said learning about the life of James helped to put her own life into perspective.


The 27 year-old added that the whole experience was like going through a type of therapy. She explained: “It changed my way of looking at everything, my approach to the songs I chose and the way I sang.


“Before I was really insecure and scared and now I have the confidence. It was like I had gone through therapy or something. I felt like a whole new women. Like I was ready for the world and ready to reveal me. The real me.”


Etta James, born Jamesetta Hawkins, had eventful career which saw her win four Grammy awards and 17 Blues Music awards. Her success was plagued by an ongoing battle with drugs and in an attempt to replicate her struggle on the big screen Beyonce says she had to visit rehabilitation clinics to garner a more insightful understanding of the pains that accompany that struggle.


Beyonce said: “I never tried drugs in my life so I didn’t know about it at all. I learned a lot about life and myself.”


The former Destiny’s Child singer said that understanding the James experience also allowed her to be more expressive about who she is on the new album adding: “I felt like I’m ready to reveal that side of me, the real side of me. I’m not afraid to do something different.”
