My list contains albums that ruled my world and were albums that I played over and over again, like in the 80's and 90's; albums that are good to me from start to end.

I wished I could include Prince, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, U2; people whom's music made a huge impact on me in the 80's and 90's but the fire seems to have gone out of them and they have not delivered albums that could entice me or make me listen to it over and over again.

Of all the artists you already named, I could have also included Rilo Kiley, D'Angelo, Burial, Me'Shell NdegéOcello, Erykah Badu, Calvin Harris, Beck, Chad VanGaalen, Ryan Adams, Aimee Mann or Martina Topley-Bird. If only I was allowed more than 15.

Of the artists I cannot see entries, I could have named Bruce Springsteen, Moloko, Hot Chip, compilations from the Maison Kitsune label, Confutatis, Keziah Jones, Kid 606, Joni Mitchell, Harry Connick Jr, Digitalis, Boards of Canada, Autechre and many, many more, as they all made albums that captivated me from start to end, but I had to make a choice.

"Think inside out."

I must admit, it was rather hard to make choices here, but in the end I just settled on what albums ruled my world and made me wanna put it on as soon as it was finished; albums that crawl into your being and that you want, that you need to make your own.

Björk is an artist that I will always follow, like Prince, as she is a force onto herself; genuine and never doing exactly what you expect, or want her to do. Here post 2001 albums are not as strong as what came before, but she always intrigues.
Vespertine was an album that is linked to an amazing concert I saw at the opera house and just like the previous concerts, it was magnificent, totally mind shattering. She took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride and knew where to hit me, both with the quiet songs and the bombastic songs.

Norma Jean Bell just has one album, sadly, but it invokes the people she worked with in the past (Zappa, Parliament) and then takes it a step further; one smorgasm of party noises. Mixed into what seems one track, this album always delivers the party feeling I need prior to going out dancing.

The Arcade Fire is a hyped band, like Franz Ferdinand and The White Stripes. Melancholy is often something I can tap into easily, due to my own personality, but this album clawed it’s way into my sub-consciousness. Their second album did not capture me as much as the multi-cultural amalgam on Funeral. Maybe it’s the subject matter in combination with all before mentioned that made it resonate with me so deeply; to me it was one of the soundtracks of the first year of having to miss my mother. My fave album of 2004.

Where Funeral tapped into my grief, Franz Ferdinand’s debut tapped into my wanting, no; needing to jump for joy. The album is bouncy and fun, just what I needed to lighten up. As with The Arcade Fire, they did not deliver a follow-up I could get into as much, but that does not mean I do not still love the vibe of this album.

Interpol was not on my radar much before this album; their debut was not bad, but lingered a bit too much in their love of Joy Division and that tainted the experience for me. Until Antics was released, that is; then I made the click. Still, I like the pound on this album better than their debut album; in my mind it’s totally connected to my trying to wanting to lift up again, like a heartbeat.

Rahsaan Patterson has one of the most interesting male voices, of all male vocalists out there he makes me think of Prince the most. His prolific song writing for so many 90’s R&B artists made his song writing firm, yet still very soulful, while I think he could be an amazing cross-over artist; Pitch Black, from his previous regular album proved to me I am right when it comes to that. Of all the ‘soul’ artists out there, he and D’Angelo make me tick that way; wanting to hear them play more styles than just R&B stuff. After Hours is soulful, full of joy and very sexy.

Iron & Wine is Sam Beam’s artist name. Beam’s first two albums seem to be straight-up folk, but this EP to me sounds like what Blue was to Joni Mitchell; an album that transcends a certain style and showcases a new level of song writing, delicately branching out musically and enriching his lyrical skills. Just six songs grace this EP, but they are all perfect and hauntingly beautiful.

Then one of my favourite artists released her solo debut; singer of Moloko, one of the freakiest bands of the 90’s and therefore immediately interesting to me, as working in record stores will help you cut through the crap with an immense ease. Ruby Blue was pre-released on limited vinyl singles, including a bonus track not on the CD and collecting them was half the pre-release fun of the album. The songs made me wanna dance, jump and sing along. It was my favourite album that year; jumping from outrageous to introvert, this album seemed to include all the mood swings I go through on a weekly base, so however I felt, this album seemed to speak to me on more than one level.

2006 was an amazing year for me, musically; four albums of that year ended up on this list. I bumped into Jenny Lewis on Cokemachineglow, my fave indie music site. Lead singer of Rilo Kiley, I of course wanted to hear what she came up with solo. Well, solo; she shared the credit with The Watson Twins. Their album was lyrically invoking early Dolly Parton and some of my fave bluegrass/folk artists.

This was also the year my buddy David played We Share Our Mothers’ Health, single of The Knife’s Silent Shout album. The electronic song sounds so natural it just imprinted itself onto my soul after one listen. I think I played it 20 times non-stop, until the download of the album was in and the rest of the album had almost the exact reaction. The electronic sounds invoked 1983 Eurythmics and Angelo Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks soundtrack, while the voices of Karin and Olof Dreijer made me think of Björk. Like Eurythmics and Björk they have the ability to make electronic sounds feel organic. The sounds switch between melancholy and incorporate techno sounds, to turn into something that my mind links to one of my fave bands ever, Joy Division. I love this album with every fibre of my soul and body.

Silent Shout just paved the way for my other favourite electro outing of that year; Ellen Allien & Apparat’s Orchestra Of Bubbles. Two German DJ’s coming up with techno beats that sometimes sound like Andrea Parker, until the beat just rips it to shreds. To listen to this on your iPod is to lose yourself; it transports you to other worlds sonically that most people would need pills and other substances to reach. At least, that’s what it does to me.

Tom Yorke finished 2006 for me. His voice as always gripping, his lyrics mystifying, the beats of this album firmly set in the electronica sounds Radiohead started embracing since ’97, songs like Black Swan hit home with a swift easy. Radiohead’s amalgam of electronica and rock is what made me fan of this band, with IstenSzek showing me the ropes and since then this band steadily developed themselves into fixtures on my favourite everything lists.

Justice. One quirky hit single, one album. One listen made me fan; with Waters Of Nazareth pounding it’s way onto my fave song list. The entire album is a boom, but it’s nothing compared to these two DJ’s live; I haven’t seen a DJ set that was able to turn a bunch of people into one mess of sweaty, jumping lunatics ever since seeing Sacha & Digweed turning Renaissance into holy ground. Also always imprinted on my retina; Abierman’s rather puzzled face at the crowd. [grin]

Radiohead returned with an album that took some time getting into, weird enough, but once broken into neatly, it’s various songs easily became a fixture on several of my play lists. To me, this album was as hard to get into as Lovesexy in 1988, but the fruits of the trouble of getting used to it were an overwhelming multitude of favourite songs.

Last on the list; Grace Jones’ Hurricane. Having been a fan since Slave To The Rhythm and then working my ways back, Jones is huge favourite of mine. As always, she moves on up a step with this album, without losing what made her past work classic; her voice is what draws me in, as always. It’s sexy, it’s brutal, it’s all over the place. I was scared, so scared. People that do not release music for a long time often seem to lose the thing that made them so special in the past, but not Jones. It seems she knows her strength and weakness and uses both to her own advantage, crafting an album that is relentless in both emotion and sound. To me, this is probably one of the best albums she released.
