Looks like Alicia Keys had a good year.

the funny thing is that if you take High School Music, the Eagles,Alicia keys and josh groban away, the industry would be asking for a "bail out" right now. Again i would still take Rihanna's numbers and re-work them, since the album was put out twice, the same should be done with all re-issues. Funny thing is that many of the top sellers were released last year and their strong sales were from early this year, showing how far down sales have gone, 68% in 3 years. Best of 2008:
Magne F, Rick Springfield, REM,John Mellencamp.

Wow...both Madonna and Janet's albums sold so poorly that they didn't make the Top 50 for the year....in a terrible year for sales. Although Madonna can crow about having the 10th biggest song of the year when single sales are doing well...double edged sword. Looks like. I never understand Billboard's deal with releasing these figures so early....Why not just wait until Christmas week, when they now business is slow and all the dust from the fourth quarter is settled. Are they doing this to get interest in their magazine at the time? It's very misleading to call these year end numbers....makes it look like people bought 3 million copies of that Josh Groban CD AFTER Christmas (although it's possible it sold some copies after Xmas...I guess). Billboard considers the thanksgiving week to be a new yr for their charts. This yr the total weeks consisted of 53weeks usually its 52 weeks but it depends on what days their charts r released

You "conveniently" forgot to mention that Michael Jackson had THREE entries on the Billboard Year End Pop Catalog chart with Thriller and Number Ones *both* landing inside the Top 10 @ #1 and #8 respectively and The Essential @ 48.

Combined, all three albums sold approximately 1.1 million copies in the USA in 2008. In separate news, Off The Wall sold 35,000+, Bad sold 10,235+, and Dangerous sold 14,120+. No figure available yet for the DVD's but I'm sure they also fared well (especially the Number Ones DVD which has been chart consistently all year.) On a side note, Prince has 0 albums charting the Year End Pop Catalog chart. Not too surprising since sales of The Very Best Of Prince and Purple Rain have dropped dramatically. You know an artist is still at the top of his game when his back catalogue can sell a million a year. 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

From the looks of this chart, it's been a piss-poor year for music. Too bad none of my faves made it. "I would like to be cremated...I spent my whole life living in a box. I don't want to die in one." Georgia Byrd (Queen Latifah in Last Holiday)

Mary J Blige came in at #12. She sold more than Rihanna, Chris Brown, Usher, Jordan Sparks and Keyshia Cole.
