Enjoying; Erykah Badu's New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) Here's the woman that takes the funk, the soul and much more and mashes it into what I suppose is the future of soul/funk and much more.

It's got all the adventurous sounds and compositions that most soul/funk/rap/urban/whatever artists miss. She crosses so many borders, she is a style on herself.

me too! We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Maya Angelou http://www.myspace.com/butterfli25

Nono. Had it since it came out, but sometimes it is just nice to jump right back and pay tribute to something that has given you so much joy.

I was totally digging this album when it came out, listened to it a lot.....but then I was a bit fed up with it, which is always the case with me & Badu.

The three albums in one year...the USB stick...lord. At least she finally delivered a new lp and toured. Part 2 - can take its time. I want it to be the flip side to Part 1. Part 1 is abrasive, uneven, messy, textured, trippy, funky sketches of works in progess...
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

I'm still trying to get it... All songs sounds the same song... Can you give me a clue???? I don't get the 'same song'-thing, so it's hard to explain why I love it so much. It's a vibe, I suppose. I loves it cuz it is layered. There's alot going on, both lyrically, vocally and musically. The sound is warm throughout, maybe you do not like the production. I love it when she goes a bit weird, with high speed voices or weird instrumentation, as on The Healer. But in all, there is no voice like Badu's; she uses her voice like an instrument and I adore that voice to bits. It's even more beautiful when she uses her voice to sing lyrics that make sense, that give guidance in a turbulent world. She's on her way to becoming a wise woman. I like that.

I tend to disagree, she's on her way to become weirder & weirder.....Like I said before, I love 'The Healer' for all it's weirdness, I think it's the best track of the record. Why? Because it's the only track that totally stands out from the rest! I will keep following her, but secretly I wish she'd go back and make an album like 'Mama's Gun'.....just love the vibe on that album. There were enough threads back then. But this is still one of my favest albums of the year. Together with the new Grace Jones.

I´m a huge Badu fan, have seen her in concert, bought all her CDs, been into her music eversince her first album came out. However, it took me a really long time to dig this album and its dark and sketchy atmosphere. The lyrics, the booklet, the whole package is very weird and uneven but in the end, I´m still happy that she released this one as is.

I have three of her albums. this, Baduizm and Worldwide Underground. I'm still not sure about her, there is some genius to her but something bugs me about Erykah and i'm not sure what.
'music combining elements of jazz, blues, and soul and characterized by syncopated rhythm and a heavy, repetitive bass line' = Funk!

I love this album. Amerykahn Promise is SO funky. It is PURE, spelt with the P of P-funk.
This is in my top 5 of this year. Probably number two, just behind the new Grace Jones. Im still flabbergasted by this album. The Cell, Master Teacher, let me preach about some "That Hump", Amerykan Promise, Me...this album slams all the new soul cats out there right now...much much more adventerous and takes the listener on a new robotic funk that has never really been explored before...Meshell comes close, but she never goes too far in the funk like this.

She is going in a Bjork type hip / funk style that I have never heard b4. Im glad she is going there.

I love this album, I think Badu is the cat's meow and I don't get people who don't get the album. The lyrics are there, I don't see how you can't get it unless you are completely oblivious to what is going on in the world. The only album I bothered to purchase this year.
