David Gilmour shows Prince how’s it done!

I’ve often found the complaining by Prince fans to be unjust. I felt that due to the variety of music, the volume of albums and touring Prince has done over the years Prince fans are a bit spoilt. So, in the past I’ve shook my head at all those moaners who never seem to be pleased. But now because of recent disappointment and frustration it has lead me to do a bit of complaining myself, hence this thread.

Prince’s strongest attribute is his ability to perform live? I’m sure the majority of fans would agree with that. In recent years we had the Musicology tour, the biggest of that year. Last year we had 21 nights, again hugely successful. What has Prince done to record these events? Well, nothing for the Mucicology tour. For 21 nights, a book with some club jams. Now let’s get some things straight here, (speaking to myself) do I like Prince for glossy photos? No! Not interested. Do I like Prince so I can read his poetry? No! Not interested. This book is a pathetic response! (end of rant)

David Gilmour shows Prince how it’s done. After his hugely successful On an Island tour Mr Gilmour releases a full 5.1 surround sound double disc concert DVD from the Royal Albert Hall with lots of extras. Pound per pound or dollar per dollar probably the best value DVD I have bought. (approx over 3 hours worth) He isn’t finished there! Several months later David releases Live in Gdansk from the same tour available to buy in four different packages. Two CDs Live in Gdansk, two CDs and one DVD, two CDs and two DVDs, or 3 CDs and two DVDs. (approx over 3.5 hours of music and 2.5 hours of footage)

As a big fan of David Gilmour am I satisfied? Satisfied is a major understatement, I couldn’t ask for anymore, I’m almost foaming at the mouth.

As a big fan of Prince am I satisfied? Not even close, dismayed, dumfounded, even angry with the wee man due to the huge disappointment.

Such events as the Musicology tour and 21 nights deserve the full 5.1 surround sound treatment. This is tragic!

It's simply a difference of opinion.

Prince feels that releasing loads of live material somehow cheapens the experience for those that were there (or at least it seems that way).

When you consider other top live performers, like Springsteen, they haven't exactly released a multitude of live material either.

This is how Prince has worked from pretty much the beginning, and he'll continue to do so. I'd suggest it makes his live performances even better in many ways.....

I've always thought of Live and Greatest Hits albums as sellout cashins. The live stuff never accurately documents the experience. Prince has always known this. Plus, there is so much bootleg stuff out there, why would he put his heart into a live release? Even ONA had a purpose that attempted to complement the concert experience versus restoring it.

A great aspect of Prince's best musical periods and creativity have been his refusal to cave in to nostalgia and backward movement. I admit that this philosophy has it's drawbacks for a fan (no reissues! lost vault classics!) but his artistist process has given us more rewards.

Well I just read up on him and still don't know him I know of Pink Floyd and have one of the Tee-shirts from a concert they did back in the day at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Excuse my ignorance 4 not knowing who he is

we get new material constantly, tours frequently...david gilmour pops up every 7-10 years.

besides, as has been mentioned, there are a ton of excellent bootlegs available; why would prince expend himself to provide what is already widely available?

Pink Floyd shows are the most extravagant around: lights, stage, band, pigs, what not. How come this man up on center stage wears this black shapeless t-shirt with his oldest jeans. Most of the time he's standing in the dark. That could be their point = it's all about the music. Which isn't true cuz there's a monster show going on. Then the point could be = it's all about the show, which is bullshit cuz then they would pay some attention to the clothes! There are some weird statements in this thread. Prince is all about over saturation. He wants to release A LOT, just like his role model James Brown, a new album every three months! Since he hasn't said anything about it, we just don't know if he doesn't want to release dvd's because it takes away from the actual show. He actually has released some video's/dvd's, you know. Not releasing because there are bootlegs around? That's just too funny! Yeah, Prince thinks the bootleg market is doing such a good job documenting his shows and doesn't want to get in their way! He just doesn't release much live stuff, and when he does it's usually not very well thought out. Why? Ask him!

3-David Who?

For a long time now Pink Floyd is a little old-fashioned. Sure, there are some youngsters into them, but I don't think you'd get much response asking about Gilmour in any high-school. And if you'd tell them, they'll most likely wouldn't even wanna know!
