Why is rock dying? Does anyone have any concrete reasons why they think Rock is dying? My main reason is because they primarily sample blues licks, they have sampled damn near every blues lick or phrase to death.

There is NOTHING left 2 steal.....and they never really had much to say just repeating stuff they heard in blues records. Rock hasn't been about the blues since the 70's. If anything, the further away from the blues the bands got, they worse they were. www.adamjames.net -official website

Same old tired (electric) guitar. Anyone can pick up the guitar and suddenly make a rock song.

there's no presentation in rock right now, other than the old standbys who have been doing the same thing forever, bless them. there are no new rock acts willing to take a chance and be offensive or crude or gender-bendy or generally nutso in a way that grabs people's attention. rock is safe and willfully derivative right now. it's tepid and vanilla. you could have the greatest, wildest guitar licks in a song ever right now, but if the band looks like a bunch of casual friday office schmucks, what's the point?

right now, the music industry is about playing it safe. if you can project a painfully user-friendly image as a musical act, you're in. that does not define most of what we consider to be true "rock" artists. the tide will turn, things will cycle, they always do. this is the age of modern day pat boones and sandra dees. miley cyrus and the jonas brothers are the new frankie and annette. everything in the top 40 has been manipulated and sanitized for your entertainment comfort. it'll get old enough to matter to the industry sooner or later. just not, apparently, right now. So long as they're family wholesome, superficiality and manufactured empty is all the rage. If I had kids I'd much rather have them exposed to sexuality and words than this mindless drivel that only serves to perpetuate more vacancy.

maybe it just died on the radio, there is not a strong radio movement for 'rock', and its up to folks to seek good music in general out where they can these days, mysapce, itunes, your friends playlist on his page, word of mouth, youtube etc

isn't that what they say about hip hop & sequencers? There is good rock, just not much of it. Jack White is doing good rock. Radiohead is doing good rock. They are not trying to fit a specific format, though, they're doing their own thing. That's what makes not only good rock but good music in general.

In the words of lenny, ROCK AND ROLL IS DEAD!!!

Rock got shot around 1989 and has been on life support ever since. Everyone from Grunge to rap has kicked it while it lay bleeding on the sidewalk. Corporate rockers like Kenny Kravitz come in once a week to feed it - you know - just to keep it "alive" if you can call that living.

I didn't know rock was dying. There is a rock station in my area that plays new rock. No, it doesn't sound like rock we listened to back in the 1980s (good rock) but it is still rock even though it sounds like just a bunch of screaming and loud overpowering guitars.

That's more than I can say for funk though. At least y'all still have rock, even if it ain't good rock. Now, me not liking today's rock....yeah, that's a matter of getting old and not liking the new generation's rock. But funk on the other hand, there's no funk, not even shitty new funk. Funk is completely gone and has been replaced with shit hop. That's not a matter of getting old and not liking the new generation's funk (because there is none), that's because shit hop actually ain't shit.

Totally disagree about Nirvana. Crappy hair metal was big at the time and they came along and said fuck that, we're just here to rock it. No stupid image (yes, it later became the image) and no ridiculous guitar wanking. (shred style)
