I'm probably in the minority, but I prefer her later work. For me, lyrics are mucho importante and - like most people - Joan's acquired wisdom as she's aged. I really like "Sex Kills", from Turbulent Indigo:

The woman has an EXPANSIVE catalogue and has changed her sound over the years, so the answer is subjective amongst fans. Where I would start is pick up her hits AND misses CD's and see what you like.

IMO, Joni's softest period came with 1982's Wild Things Run Fast and 1985's Dog Eat Dog. (Though "Chinese Cafe," "You Dream Flat Tires," and "Love" saved the former from utter expendability.) I'd say she didn't quite successfully find her place amid the new synthesized pop sounds of the time. Everything else is treasure... and my favorite period is made up of her forays into the fusion sounds of 1972-1977. That to me is Joni's golden period.

I feel that people greatly under estimate Songs to a Seagull ~ my favourite Joni album with Cactus Tree my favourite song. Blue is essential and I love Turbulent Indigo (Job's Sad Song ~ The Sire of Sorrow is a stunning work), Hissing of Summer Lawns, Clouds, Ladies of the Canyon, Mingus, Hejiara. Shine is great too. An incredible artist. The personal life deeply lived always expands into truths beyond itself. --Anais Nin

I now have all her albums because I found they are all somehow essential (much like Prince's catalog). "Yeah, you can find some shit-hop that is good." - TheMightyCelestial

But if you have to be picky I'd get Court and Spark and Blue first, then something more complex like Hejira and you'll be a fan from then on, believe me, you'll want everything.

I have my own favorites, but I think this would be the best introduction. "Yeah, you can find some shit-hop that is good." - TheMightyCelestial
