I'd have to say Dusty Springfield would top the list. Let me put in a word for Corinne Drewery, the lead singer for Swing Out Sister. She's got a really nice voice.

That list is not complete without the fabulous Alice Russell, another Brit.

I've been listening to her for several years as a cameo artist with Quantic, Dublex Inc, The Bamboos and other European acts and I was totally gobsmacked when I recently saw a photo of her.

WTF???!!! I never knew she was white!

Such a soulful voice, I'd always just assumed she was black but even if she was green, this is one awesomely talented and powerful singer. If you're not hip to her, you gotta check her out.

More her own personal style than genre, I think there's the argument A LOT of her stuff (or stuff with the Eurythmics) would qualify: "Would I Lie To You?" is darned near on par with Aretha's "Respect," IMO. Also, consider "Step By Step" (which Whitney later covered), "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" with Al Green, "Sing," just about anything from Diva, many of her Medusa covers, and so on... not to mention her live performances. Girl is bad!
