Why I stopped going 2 Hip-hop events....Example 1

Rap Stars Scatter During Shooting At Midtown Hip-Hop Fashion Show

POSTED: 8:27 am EDT April 18, 2008
UPDATED: 9:11 am EDT April 18, 2008

ATLANTA -- A 22-year-old man is hospitalized after being shot early Friday at a nightclub in Midtown Atlanta.

Police say the man was shot in the stomach about 2 a.m. inside the club called Compound.

Atlanta police Sergeant Sam Norris says the man was sitting with friends during a Hip Hop fashion show. Witnesses told police that they heard the shots, but no one said they saw the shooting or a gun.

The fashion show featured a number of big name R&B and rap celebrities; including Ashanti, Ray J, Mario and JC.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Yep, I hear ya.

I would've liked to have seen Mary J, but I wouldn't go near it with Jay-Z there too.

I went to see Wycelf a few years back and although I enjoyed his show, I felt unsafe afterwards while trying to leave the venue. I know for a fact that several people around us were carrying guns and that ruined the evening for me.

In fact, the group of people sitting in front of us were drinking all night too and several times they made comments about their weapons. As a 40 something white woman I felt very unsafe. I'd love to know how they got in with their weapons though shrug. I swear that security is a joke at some of these venues.

Y r u 40+ @ a rap concert?

I'm a 30 year old black male, and I know that's not my crowd. Just like u won't see me @ a heavy metal concert getting my brains bashed in a mosh pit

Guns don't kill, ppl kill. And the violence that's goes on is a reflection of AMERICAN culture not Hip Hop.

God bless america and pass the ammo!

Plz stop with the implications that my culture(hip hop) causes violence.

It's not THAT bad lol Just keep your behind out of "Little 5 Points".

I'm sorta surprised this happened in Midtown, because that area has gone under major "regentrification" over the last 5 years. There are a lot of urban professionals & ecclectic artists based there...and lawd knows that's where one can find a lot of the cute gay boyz and gay friendly businesses. But then, I guess it really is a city the way Katt Williams described it: it's a place where you can make all your dreams come true, or get shot at a traffic light whofarted

type of crowd it's just not worth it to me.

But seriously, I went to see Jay Z in 2006 and I could tell he was impressed with the crowd (sold out, packed arena) for just enjoying ourselves and having a damn good time.

maaaaan if the roots have violence at their concerts then YES hip hop needs to be banned for life or the roots need to go on strike. !

shouldn't be anyone there but weedheads with shades and dreadlocks.

sad part about those concerts like jay's and maybe ice cube is, that, heck people who are his age and mature enough to appreciate them guys and know it is just music can't because morons show up like there is a real kill message behind the concerts, and, it is suppose to be used as the place to vent eek . the new generation want to see the concerts, and heck his age group and the youngins want to take what he says seriously and be tripping. plus when problems break out and maybe you have front row seats or are not sitting near an exit, it will take forever to get out of the venue, and heck no one knows what the next drama is to break out, and you are stuck in there. But me, I would still take the risk. from what is said this is the first time in lik 15 years that there was a guy and girl on the same ticket, maybe to keep shit like that from happening.

I'm telling it to YOU who wants to repeat the same story spinning a fashion show with R&B acts that has a negative event into something that has ANYTHING to do with rap.

Rap is NOT the cause of this.

I'm afraid the stats speak for themselves.....

Im afraid that stats are bias and only used to persude someones viewpoint, especially when dealing with Hip Hop and Black People. Im an expert on both and the "stats" arent true i.e "there are more black men in jail than in college"...

but we're not talking about how many black men are in jail or collge.....maybe you should ask the viewpoint of those shot or stapped at these rap-events where these incidents occurred.....

FYI, Cee - the article you're quoting doesn't refer to them as such. It says "R&B and rap celebrities."

I agree...If you want to shit on rap, at least bring up the DMX concert at Indiana University that turned into a mini riot...And even that can't be put in that category (considering DMX was performing for a mostly white crowd..)

Here's the deal guys....A bunch of R&B artists and actors getting together for a fashion show does not equate to a "hip hop event.." Unless you know nothing of the hip hop culture and is on some Bill O'Reilly shit...There's plenty of ways you can shit on hip hop...That story aint one of them...
