John Mayer Really Likes Curtis Mayfield

No, I mean really likes Curtis Mayfield, says Roger Friedman:

Contemporary folk rock singer John Mayer is in trouble with the family of the late Curtis Mayfield.

Kirk Mayfield, the late R&B great’s son, wants Mayer put on notice publicly. The singer’s latest single, “Waiting on the World to Change,” Mayfield believes, is uncomfortably close sounding to his father’s classic, “We’re a Winner.”

Indeed, one listen to “Waiting” and it’s pretty obvious that the music is pure Mayfield. Even Mayer’s performance of it sounds like Curtis, who was famous for “Superfly,” “I’m So Proud,” “People Get Ready” and many other classic songs.

Of course, this kind of thing seems to be happening a lot lately. I told you last week that John Legend lifted the music from “Stormy,” by the Classics IV, changed the lyrics and pretended he wrote a new song called “Save Room.”

Lenny Kravitz, you have been warned!

IMHO, the song sounded like a direct descendant of "People Get Ready".

And Stevie bit off of Albert King and Muddy Waters....Just to name a few.

John is a pretty good musician. I can see that the line between one being influenced and one biting off of another is getting narrow...

It's funny how those bullshit writers of blog you posted are so quick to slam Kravitz and give rip off artist like the one titled on this thread and Timberlake credit. Talk about some racial bias. More things change, more things stay the same. Ain't that a bitch.

Well, when Lenny first arrived on the scene his first few albums were complete rip-off's of the Beatles & Pink Floyd. Some of the songs on his albums had the same chord progression as some of their songs. Take a listen to his let "Let Love Rule", that a Beatle song.

I can't believe the bullshit jealousy and hatred I read sometmes in these posts.

John Mayer plays guitar in a soulful way. Period.

Soulful music is soulful music. All musicians are influenced by musicians before them.

I agree some songs take more liberty than others when it comes to a particular riff or chord. A good example is the current Alicia Keys song (Like You'll Never See Me Again) which to me sounds EXACTLY like the piano vamp at the end of the Purple Rain Concert tour.

But don't hate on Mayer because he is having success doing what he does. His solos don't mess with Prince or Jesse Johnson. He can't play with that kind of speed, and rhythmic precision. But Mayer has mastered the the ART of playing within his own skill set.

He has a bluesy, soulful tone that resonates with me at least.
We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams.

Nothing. I like John. I think he's a talented guitarist. Do I think he was "taught by Curtis Mayfield"? Hell no. If you want to credit someone for musing John, look no further than his guitarist David Ryan Harris. Go listen to DRH's solo CD and tell me John didn't pick up a thing or two (or 10) from David. That's not to say that he didn't study Curtis Mayfield, Eddie Kendricks, Albert King and many others (along with the obvious SRV influences)

Okay. I think that he is a great guitarist. I have seen him live and his has got the chops.

I wish I had developed a higher opinion of Kravitz and Mayer, but I was just too fuckin' lazy (and cheap). Bottom-line: fuck 'em for now. Maybe I'll be a fan later.
