Best of Soul Train - 10/6/07

What's up y'all? Once again, it's the one and only Vain Andy holding it down for The Audience who is in The Big Apple this weekend. I'm sure he's having a good time because he's definately in the place to be. Wish I was there.

Anyway, here is this week's episode of The Best of Soul Train:

Thinking of You - Earth, Wind, and Fire

The Way You Make Me Feel - Michael Jackson

Performance: How Ya Like Me Now - Kool Moe Dee

Scramble Board (Wynton Marsalis): I Want Her - Keith Sweat

Performance: Hello Beloved - Angela Winbush and Ronald Isley

Pump Up The Volume - M/A/R/R/S

Performance: Far Away Eyes - Vanity

Dark and Lovely - Stevie Wonder

Performance: Wild Wild West - Kool Moe Dee

Line Dance: Rocket 2 U - The Jets

Performance: Undress - Vanity

That ought to hold you for a little while. You come join The Audience next week and you can bet your last money, it's all gonna be a stone gas honey. I'm Vain Andy and, as always in parting, we wish you love....peace....and....SOUL!!!!!

Thankfully, this episode is the last late 80s episode for a while and next weekend they are going back to the 70s. Thanks Don.

As for this week's episode. What can I say? Hey, it was the horrible late 80s. More typical bland music from the era.

THE GOOD PARTS OF THE EPISODE

Vanity: She was looking more beautiful than I have ever seen her look. The two songs she performed were great, especially "Undress". I don't have these two songs but they are definately better than anything on the two albums of her's that I have.

Pump Up The Volume by M/A/R/R/S: Unfortunately, this song was the one played at the halfway mark of the show and was cut extremely short. This was one of the best songs out that year. More jams like this should have been played on this episode instead of the bland ones chosen for crossover appeal.

The Line Dance with Rocket 2 U: Another one of the few great songs from such a dull era of music filled with crossover pop/R&B and adult contemporary bullshit.

THE BAD PARTS OF THE EPISODE

The Angela Winbush and Ronald Isley Performance: This is exactly the kind of boring adult contemporary bullshit that was taking up so much of the R&B airwaves thanks to Shitney Ass Houston. I was smoking a cigarette when this song came on and caught myself drifting off to sleep. Hell, I could have burned the damn house down.

The Choice of Songs Played: The Michael Jackson, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Stevie Wonder songs during that era were some of the worst of their careers.

The Stiffness of the Dancers: Lots of stiff ladies dancing throughout the show as stiff as white girls. I can kind of understand though since R&B in that era had been severely "whitened up".

bored I tried to stay awake while this episode was on,but I was so bored.

It was nice hearing "Rocket 2 U" and "Thinking Of You",two decent songs from an otherwise horrible period.

Vanity didn't wake you up? I had never heard those two songs but I like them. The rest of the episode was a typical late 80s mess.

I haven't watched this episode yet, but I'm not looking forward to it. I like a lot of the songs used in this episode (Thinking of You, Hello Beloved, Rocket 2 U), but the rest were horrible. As for the Stevie song, Dark and Lovely, I HATE THAT SONG!!! I wouldn't call it the worst of his career, but it is one of the worst on the Characters album.

As for Vanity, I agree with Funkpill, she is one beautiful/fine woman, but she can't sing worth a damn!!! That has been evident from the beginning. Come on, how many of u thought she could sing when you first heard Nasty Girl?

Vanity was okay, but I never really thought of her as an exciting solo performer. She was much more exciting in Vanity 6,when she was half-naked,talking about "I need 7 inches or more",lol.By comparison, her solo performances are mediocre (although she's fine as hell).

She sings as well as an opera singer compared to these shit hoppers "talking" all over the songs these days. And the people that can sing these days, sing over shitty music. Vanity had great music behind her so that makes her 50 times better than any of the acts that came out in the 90s and today.

I saw them and Don said that they only come out when the rappers are appearing. I miss the early 80s episodes where the men would have been giving her fashion tips instead of drooling. lol

I wouldn't go that far. Come on, Mariah, Celine, Lina, Ledisi, etc are true singers. Vanity was crafted to be an entertainer (which is nothing wrong with that), but a true singer, she is not.

I liked this episode Vanity killed it for me.....Jesse Johnson did produce the 2 songs and at that time she was working with Jam & Lewis, Tony LeMans,Jesse Johnson on some music for a album to be released later that year 88, I would've loved to hear the stuff they came up with....I am sure it was HOTT! 4 that time.

That explains why the songs had a Prince-feel 2 them.

this episode rocked imo! kool moe dee killed it. it's funny because just a couple of days later he was on the hip hop honors looking a bit different but he's still the man! i hope they honor him next year!

what can i say about vanity? i love her. damn, there really is something special about that chick. too bad she flipped out and then became obsessed with god but then again i'm sure she neede him badly.

Yes he produced undress me and faraway eyes for the action jackson film that vanity starred in with carl"thick assed mustache"weathers. I was about to school vain on that when he stated that these two songs were better than any on her solo albums. The reason is jesse put that bump on it.
