Your Top Ten Rock Artist of All Time

For all you rock gods out there, this thread is for you. I'm not much a rock person, more R&B than anything. But over the years I've rocked some times and enjoyed some good rock music. I'm more a classic rock guy (stuff I grew up with) than the modern stuff now. But I do have 10 faves and they are:

2. Kiss
3. Led Zeppelin
4. Queen
5. The Rolling Stones
6. Red Hot Chili Peppers
7. Rod Stewart
8. Lenny Kravitz
9. Van Halen
10. Bon Jovi

1.) The Isley Brothers - and I'll state my point as why: no other black band ever signify the spirit of rock in all of its forms like the Isleys from the early days with "Shout", "Twist & Shout" and "Respectable" to the later day covers of "Spill the Wine", "Summer Breeze" and "Machine Gun" to originals like "That Lady", "Live It Up", "Livin' in the Life" and "Ballad for the Fallen Soldier", plus they had the baddest guitarist in their group for a time with the second baddest guitarist ever a member of the family. These are reasons they earned the spot in my top ten rock artists list.

2.) Chuck Berry - again an artist that signified the spirit of rock and in essence is rock & roll to me. The first rock singer-songwriter and the first guy to make dance moves while playing the guitar... GENIUS!

3.) Jimi Hendrix - the fact that the greatest guitarist of all time is a black man is enough for me...

4.) Queen - the baddest rock group ever for the thing that they weren't afraid to experiment with anything and they were really the first rockers I got into.

5.) Black Sabbath - bad boys with the mouths of disgruntled youths creating a sound for a generation or two. Metal lives on because of Ozzy and his gang.

6.) Fishbone - brothers with reckless abandon; mixed rock with ska and funk to a perfect fit.

7.) The Red Hot Chili Peppers - these guys, I'm covinced, are brothas in white men's bodies, lol. Funky, edgy, fun, etc. They're probably the greatest rock group to emerge out of the 1990s.

8.) Metallica - nuff said.

9.) Iggy Pop - lemme remind you this list isn't in NO ORDER but the guy is the reason the RHCP's, punk bands, and rockers now have JOBS and shit. He was the rawer version of Jim Morrison without all the lizard king bullshit.

10.) Todd Rundgren - the guitar solo in "Bat Out of Hell" is enough for me to state why he's here. Plus the guy created some great rock songs over the years.

I'm always thrown off by broad genres of music cause I never know where certain artists fit in.

Now I LOVE the Isley Brothers, but I wouldn't put them in the same genre bag as Marilyn Manson, even though they are both making rock music, but its just, well I don't know

I think I just don't like broad genres that much

Well IMO they're both rock, just different: the Isleys are in the classic rock format, Marilyn is a SHOCK rocker, get it? I don't down rock down to how hard the song. Sometimes you can take a gospel wail over a hellish scream. I'm an Isley rocker more than a Marilyn shocker, dig? You hear their version of "Summer Breeze", check out the instrumental at the end when Ernie Isley is killing that guitar... he rocked so hard it made Seals & Crofts monks or something.

Uh, well you sorta cleaned up and rephrased exactly what I was trying to say I just always get frustrated trying to narrow down large genres of music down to a few favorites. I like to pick from a particular subgenre better like "top classic rock jams" or "best punk songs".

I did say Isleys as a broad artist because they perform all sorts of "genres" (as does Tina Turner whom Insatiable has on the list ).

I have to say though I do dig Marilyn like I dig David and Jobriath and 'em. Freaks who create good music though I have something against his cover of "Sweet Dreams" for some reason.

I don't like his cover of Sweet Dreams either. It sounds kinda forced to me and less mechanical than the original (which is part of its charm)
