R.I.P. Baby Girl aka Aaliyah - 8-25-01

Some beautiful tributes (some fan made, some of them from the media i.e. BET, MTV, etc including the "I Miss You" music video).

It is so unsettling that she is not with us anymore. The scene would be so much different. It just seemed unreal. Still feels that way, too.

Then 9/11 happened a few weeks after that. The last few months of that year were just very dark in America, culturally.

Yeah, that was a said day indeed. She was just starting to get the accolades she deserved. I was looking forward to her next music career move(s). I'm sure more established producers would have been chomping at the bit to produce her.

I must admit that I couldn't get with her self titled album when it was released but it's really a classic to remember...

Don't forget "Messed Up"! I love that one. I think I saw that the 2004 rerelease doesn't have it as a bonus track. disbelief

Isn't "Never No More" on the album too. Ya'll talkin' about her last album right? Never No More it's one of my favorites on the album.

Yes, but I have to admit it's probably my least favorite. I still dig it, though.

I've always loved her. Her first album with pedo was only okay, but for me her music really took off once she hooked up with Timbaland. Great stuff. It's been said before, but she was a good entertainer who never realized her full potential.

Does anyone remember when Mary J. was on Oprah last year or the year before promoting Breakthrough? She talked more about addiction and taking control of her life and - I'm paraphrasing - she said something about not wanting to see her life go the direction Aaliyah's took and that she was associating herself with the wrong people. What was she referring to?

Blanche: Oh, I do love the rain so! It reminds me of my first kiss.
Dorothy: Awww, your first kiss was in the rain...
Blanche: No, it was in the shower.

Who knows what Mary was referring to and its a little lame if Mary was throwing a litle salt in Aaliyah's memory. At the point of her death, no one knew of any negativity going on so why bring it up now.

Maybe its the fact she was engaged to Damon Dash.....or something shrug

Who knows....

I remember that episode (you know I watch me some Oprah lol ) & Mary & Aaliyah were friends it seemed. Mary was commenting on her life being out of control & Aaliyah's death as wakeup calls for her - nothing about the direction of Aaliyah's life, just that an artist & friend had died too soon & it really fucked Mary up...

Aww, I still miss Aaliyah. She was one of the few celebrities who I cried for when she passed away....Luther hit me pretty hard too. What you saw was who she was and that's a rare thing to see in the entertainment industry. I remember being upset that many people didn't buy her last album when it first came out, but were more than happy to pick up a copy after she was gone; but they showed love, so I can't really be all that mad. Soo sad when the angels come and take one of their own back home. Her acting career was really about to take off and I was ready for it. I still can't believe that she's been gone for 6 years now, but I'll just listen to what DMX said at the beginning of the 'I Miss You' video. "I still can't believe that you're gone, so I won't...I'll just think of it like we haven't seen each other in a while." Keep flying with the angels, Baby Girl...you really were one in a million.
