Well I'm hardly an expert on the subject but of course the biggest reason is the idea that she was responsible for breaking up the Beatles by steering John into ever-more artsy and pretentious territory and for presumptuously trying to control or influence the group's music when she wasn't a member, which the others resented.

From what from little I know of the Beatles' breakup, all of that was true, and it was certainly a contributing factor to the breakup but hardly the only or biggest one. Paul's increasing domineering behavior towards the rest of the group was probably a bigger factor, as was just their increasing divergent musical identities, and George in particular was stifling in a group where he was relegated to two songs an album.

I personally just think Yoko's music sucks, she comes across as very pretentious and the musical influence she had on John was sometimes downright dreadful (eg. all of John's solo material prior to Plastic Ono Band if you ask me). Basically I don't like her, but don't have the vehement hatred many others have.

Thanx nod

Some Beatles fans seem to be rather personal when it comes to her to the point where some of them even blame HER for Lennon's death confused

when i was going to school at BU, a group of friends went to a Yoko Ono Film Collection. OMG. it was off the wall kooky and no one liked it. in fact, most of the audience ended up mocking it, which made the experience tolerable. smile

yoko is a strong woman who creates very polarizing art, which john found attractive and which influenced him to go in other directions, much to the dismay of his beatle fans. i'm not going to get into it with the yoko-haters who are bound to creep into this thread any moment, but i think she's an amazing woman whose art is very spiritual and even very witty, if people are willing to take the time to look beyond the "weird" surface of it. i think she and john loved each other very much and they fed each other as artists. that's all that matters.

Thank you.

I've only seen one of her films, Bed-In, starring her and John, and I loved it, as both a film and as performance art.

I've also heard John wrote Imagine, inspired by one of her art pieces. You can't say the influence was completely negative.

nod I thought that was a joke when I first heard that, but it's true. Seems everyone attracts fucking nutters for fans.

The theory is that Yoko was somehow involved with John's death because she was standing 2 feet away when he was shot and didn't have a scratch. So fucking what, says I. All that means is Chapman was a good shot. neutral

clapping

I can't call myself a fan of Yoko's work by a long shot, but I believe she and John truly loved each other, and that can only be a good thing. I like her. smile

It would do the anti-Yokos a lot of good to remember that it's rare for a band -any band -to stick together for much of a length of time and not grow apart or have different interests. Yoko or no, the breakup of the Beatles was more or less inevitable.

LadyQ

A number of fans are only going on how the tabloids portrayed her, which was all they had to go on back at that time. It has only been recently that many documentaries, interviews and candid stories have come to light talking about what actually happened back then.

The Beatles were in trouble before Yoko even showed up on scene. It was Paul who had been the constant threat of leaving. The members had pretty much grown apart, weren't getting along and there were financial troubles also. Yoko showing up was just the straw that broke the camel's back which John took her everywhere, including the studio sessions, which weren't full of lovie dovie commaderie anyway and having her there all the time just made things more tense, which their frustrations made it into print. Yet, it was made to seem that their not getting along just happened when Yoko showed up and solely because of her.

Also, John was married at the time with his son, Julian, so that didn't invite much love either and she was a foreignor on top of that. Interracial relationships were still very taboo in the late 60s.

So when the Beatles finally broke up, the tabloids, public opinion, the other Beatles' dislike of her just used Yoko as the likely scapegoat. She was easy to blame and easy to hate. The other Beatles used that to gain a sort of sympathy for their future endeavors. Even for John who was seen as bewitched by this so-called evil woman who had an agenda to bring down the Beatles and put herself on the map by using John.

John addressed the suggestion that Yoko caused the breakup of The Beatles on that legendary episode of The Dick Cavett Show. I'm not a huge fan of Yoko's music, though I do think Kiss Kiss Kiss is one of the most sublimely ridiculous songs ever. However, it's always seemed a preposterous notion to me that she had anything to do with their demise. The four hadn't been getting along for a while, but, hey...it's much easier to blame it on a woman.

I hate her fucking guts and the greatest tragedy in rock & roll history is that Mark David Chapman shot John instead of pointing the gun a few feet to the side and getting her.

Not that I wish her dead (necessarily) but if it had to be her or John, it should have been her.

To Beatle Fans she will also be hated because of the break up and taking John into a different direction, but seriously they were going that way anyway. George had already quit the group a bunch of times, Paul was ready to be a solo performer, Ringo pretty much wanted to do movies and things like that, and John needed an interest too. The big problem the Beatles had were that the creative forces of Paul,John and Goerge were all growing very fast, and they were tired of being stifled by the group and the image, thats why they broke up, nothing to do with Yoko. Now in terms of certain things she has done i do have issues, mainly the whole Julian Lennon issue still bothers me, basically Julian spent money that his father gave him to actually go to auctions to buy his fathers art work and things for himself because nothing was given to him or even asked if he wanted it. Julian ironically, is much like his dad, but as Julian said "His dad song about love and peace, but i never saw that love". John was very flawed, and he said it himself, ironically, in his last interview dec 8th, he spoke of how he screwed up julian, and wanted to fix it.
