Have you heard about this online games where you have to keep her from getting sober? That's so major record company (it's from them) trying to be hip and cool and alternative. rolleyes

neutral tacky!

Didn't know that- I read that her former label asked her to go to rehab which inspired the track and moved her to a new label- the one with the website I guess.

all i know is, i love me some amy right now. songs from her album have been total earwigs in my head all week and i listen to her at least once a day. that's rare for a new album with me these days. i love her voice, her sense of humor, her style. i think as derivative as she may be, she's a breath of fresh air for mainstream pop. good for her.

I totally agree on everything you said. Also, what seems like for the first time ever, everyone I asked about her yet seems to love her as well. They usually have this strange look on their faces when I tell them about music.

I passed by Virgin and Amy's 'Frank' CD was 50% off (original price $26.99--what kind of fuckery is this? confused ) It's pretty good. Not as polished or sophisticated as 'Back To Black'--in both vocals and music--and it's much more jazzy, but still worth hearing.

i'm scared to listen to this. i fear it would be like someone really famming out over "jagged little pill" and then listening to one of alanis's pre-crossover teenybopper albums. i don't want to tarnish my amy love right now. boxed

It's not that different. lol

You can hear that she hasn't really settled into her singing style like on 'Back To Black' in that her vocals are a little more straightforward on this one. And I thought the drum programming was a little too conventional at times compared to the more organic sound of the second album. I proabably would have liked 'Frank' more if I had heard it first. To me it's kind of like hearing 'For You' after hearing 'Prince'.

I've had her cds for a few months and she's got a great voice. She was underwhelming live, though.

After all of the hype and people praising her around here, I bought the cd. The single "Rehab" was better than most of the album. I was suprised at how much she directly ripped the Motown sound but somehow didn't improve on it.

confused "Somehow"? I can't imagine what could be done to improve the Motown sound.

Anyway, I finally gave the album a listen. It's pretty good. I appreciate the fact that it's so short.

i like the fact that it's so short too. it's probably a contributing reason to why i like it so much - it doesn't overstay its welcome, and it leaves me wanting more. nod

and i think it would be folly to try to "improve" the motown sound. that said, i think the album does a good job of mixing retro style with modern production.

Yup. You nailed it, right there. It's a pretty pretentious gimmick she's working. It's like she's fixated on the idea of the boozy blues/jazz songstress rather than just expressing something about who she actually is, what her heritage is, etc.

Also, her melodies are naff biggrin
[Edited 3/28/07 20:48pm]

Why does an homage to the wall of sound have to be a 'gimmick'? If that's what she was into at the time she wrote this record, then so be it. In addition, sometimes I think we get a little too compartmentalized and label happy 'round here: why do the accusations have to start that the child is fixated with an 'idea' of being a boozy blues/jazz songstress? In terms of who she is, she is a lush and an admitted manic depressive who won't take meds, and a hell of a song stylist. Have you ever heard Winehouse do standards? She IS a jazz songstress, she can tear up classics like Tenderly or Moody's Mood For Love better than most internationally distributed jazz singers I know even a little older than she, her phrashing is SICK. Cursing and tough motor-jacket posturing aside, through both her writing and live performances she has the ability to convey universal themes like loss, hard living, or anguished love with a frailty, a sensitivity and authenticity unparralled by any of her peers currently out there. And the last time I checked, in terms of her music's thematic content, 'PAIN' knows no color or cultural boundary, so I don't understandnd why "what her heritage is" should even come into play here. confused

*sleepy grammar edit*

what i said (to which you're responding to the response) is that based on the one song I've heard, I said I liked the music, except she seems to be doing everything she can to obscure the melody or likeability of a perfectly good song.

and the fact that i can tell that she CAN sing, underneath it all, just by that one screwed-up vocal performance, makes it even worse.

so was my answer. if you can't get your shit together enough to do your job, then it's your own fault. sometimes it's the label's fault. but sometimes it's the artist's own behavior.

An artist can take as many weekend benders as they want. If the records sell, the artist won't be dropped.

if the artist can't get her shit together to put on a scheduled concert because of a weekend bender, eventually the audience will drop the artist whatever the label's intent is.

hmmm Something no one has mentioned or possibly noticed.

I wonder how they're getting away with using the exact arrangement of Marvin & Tammi's Ain't No Mountain High Enough for that tune?

Down to the rimshot rhythm.

It's credited to Ashford & Simpson (as well as Winehouse) in the liner notes.

huh? i have the non-US download and it has 11 tracks (including 'addicted') and i have the US compact disc, which only has 10 tracks (excluding 'addicted') plus a bonus track which is a remix including some lame-o rapping.

While the European version also just has 10 tracks (excluding addicted).
Rehab does have two different b-sides: "Close to the front" and "Do me good". Haven't heard both...

Btw, it's an 2006 release...

right, and how often do we hear that it's touring that makes the artist money? you keep cancelling concerts because you're drunk, and eventually no one's going to buy a ticket when you announce them. then a big chunk of that audience isn't going to buy your next record. then where are you?

Touring is the primary source of income for artists that don't sell records. Amy's album is selling very well.
