what's the big deal about Bjork?!

i bought Vespertine when it came out and maybe that wasn't a good introduction to Bjork. but not feelin' her. vastly overrated

I loved her on Debut, grew a little weary at Post, and absolutely hated the one after that...the one with 'The Hunter'

I don't mind Bjork. I like what she's about more than anything else; I appreciate her art from an auditory distance.

Good question. When she broke off solo after the Sugarcubes went bust, I was a bit shocked. I only saw her as a singer for the band. Who knew she had a LOT of creativity in her? Honestly, it took a while for me to get into her solo stuff. I was imagining that it was going to be a lot like the sugarcubes stuff...with her voice (I never did like Birthday). I was a bit skeptical.

Debut/Post - Debut is a very good album. Much more playful than I would have thought it to be. Nellie Hooper as a producer did a fantastic job in creating a pop record with a very personal feel to it. It should be noted that there are many musical styles on it, and you normally don't get such an eclectic display on a debut album. I think that was the point in that we would not know what to expect next. Post is almost better in many aspects from the first album. The songs are better, but the album doesn't hang as well and the musical genres represented are vastly apart. Still songs like Possibly Maybe, Isobel, Hyperballad, The Modern Things, shine with a different brilliance. Her song writing has definitely strengthened on this album.

By now we have 2 great pop records that have not only redefined what pop can sound like, but have also been artistic endeavors. To see someone flip over the complete minimalistic Headphones one has to wonder what the big deal is all about. Bjork had started to create a world around her music that not only seemed personal, but fictional at the same time. Think "Bjork's Labryinth" and you'd be getting close.

Then comes Homogenic/Vespertine. These is her "concept" albums. Both albums culls in the die hards and separate themselves from the pack of pop. Bjork is way more interested in challenging you musically now. You think it's Drum and Bass. It is but on Bjorks terms. Gorgeous strings, manic beats and strange strange lyrics. While artistically stronger than the previous 2 efforts, they lacked what made the other 2 great…fun & whimsy.

At this point in her career, she has given her fans 4 incredible albums, numerous remixes and B-Sides. She was one of the first to come out with 2 or 3 versions of the single...again proving her ability to change the way we experience music. She is also into packaging her music with her videos. Oh and her videos were beyond fantastic. Personally, I cannot think of anyone who has had a good of a run with videos than she has...most of them are simply groundbreaking. On top of that, she has created an image of herself that is fashionable and artistic.

More recently Bjork has done Medula and Drawing Restraint 9. Both works I find a little too experimental for my tastes. I am sure Medula will be revered in the future as a great work, but I just didn’t get into it.

I know I have not mentioned Selma Songs. While a part of her repertoire, I find it more of a side project than a “Bjork album” IMH

it held my attention the whole running time
but I never bought the album

You dig her or you don't. I would hardly say she sucks! I dig her but haven't bought anything in quite a while. She releases way too many audio but mostly video sets!

Funny, cause I actually hated Bjork UNTIL I heard Medulla!
