Oh, and I know it technically doesn't count since it's from 1992, but the whole Reel to Reel album by Grand Puba was my SHIT. "Check Tha Resume," "Honey Don't Front," "360 Degrees (What Goes Around)" and "Big Kids Don't Play" were all cuts the likes of which you just don't hear anymore.

"Ya Know How It Goes" is a classic cut, along with "Soul Controller."

Reel To Reel and Mecca and the Soul Brother are vintage, quintessential East Coast hip-hop at its finest.

That album epitomizes so much for me. This was My Era, and living in Boston, East Coast rap was the shit. I had so much hope for hip-hop then. There was so much interesting, experimental stuff going on, whether it was with house beats or jazz flavor. So much real and positive lyricism. Even when artists were painting grim pictures of reality, they was usually speaking against it instead of glorifying it and the paper chase.

I found a mix tape I made probably in 1995. This is what was on it:

Side A:
Rosetta Stone - The Witch
Love Like Blood - Walking In Demimondes
Mephisto Walz - Protecteur
The Wake - Sideshow
Children On Stun - By The Wayside
Die Laughing - Labyrinthine
Sunshine Blind - Burned At The Stake
Vendemmian - Masquerade
Screams For Tina - Kristen
Brotherhood Of Pagans - Resurrection

Side B:
Corpus Delicti - Noxious (The Demon's Game)
Incubus Succubus - Catherine
The Merry Thoughts - Boy Sinister
London After Midnight - Revenge
Moonchild - Holy Mass
Nosferatu - Savage Kiss
Catastrophe Ballet - The Garden Of Decay
Paralysed Age - Nocturne
Shadow Project - Knight Stalker

I was clearly in a much different place than everyone else here. smile

I still listened to biggies like Prince, Janet and Tori Amos during that period, but they took a back seat to the other stuff. And somehow I picked up both Digable Planets albums when they were released so I wasn't completely removed from the rest of the world.
