Documentary - What's Going On: The Life & Death of Marvin Gaye

Did any others Brits see this last night? It was on BBC4 at about 9pm.

It's repeated again in about twenty minutes, at midnight.

I really didn't know much about him other than his music and the fact that he went a bit druggy and ran off to Belgium.

It was pretty insightful.

You didn't even know his father murdered him? (yes it was murder, the altercation was over and the maniac showed no regards to his wife by firing at Marvin when he was next to her). The coolest Marvin Gaye tidbit I ever heard was that he spent the last few months living at home with his parents doing coke and watching porn all day. Sounds like the life, right? lol

Oh yeah, I knew about his father murdering him. I remember it being in all the newspapers at the time.

The documentary has a reconstruction of his death - not in a tacky way. You sort of see blurred figures through a window and hear the gunshot and screaming.

For those who are interested, I strongly recommend the biography Divided Soul written by Dave Ritz, a music journalist who became his biographer after writing the only positive review for Marvin´s Here, My Dear album.
He accompanied Marvin on tour and gives a lot of details about the songs, the history of the music , family, personal tragedies, drugs etc.
He also co-wrote Sexual Healing and never got any credit for it until a few years ago.
VERY good biography, a must read for any Marvin Gaye fan.

Also hepls you to understand Nona Gaye´s Prince penned song Snowman a bit better.

Divided Soul is probably one of the rawest, most important music biographies I've ever read! If you haven't read this one, go to your nearest library and check it out.

That David Ritz was interviewed on the documentary. They also had interviews with his sister-in-law and second wife.

I totally agree regarding Divided Soul. David Ritz is an excellent biographer! He has helped many musicians get their stories on paper, but the Marvin Gaye bio is one of his best. It has been in my library since it was first released. I recommend it as well.
