Janet Jackson's accomplishments not appreciated?

For some reason, I don't hear people giving Janet any credit for her success. Why is that?

IMHO

i think Janet was being given plenty credit all the way up until "velvet rope"; perhaps her most critically acclaimed album, and i believe most fans favourite. from "control" up to "velvet rope", there was growth, musically and lyrically. then.....
well; "all for you" and "damita jo" offered nothing more than sex-kitten cooing, watery ballads, and mediocre dance floor tunes. the exceptions being "doesn't really matter", "all for you". "r&b junkie", and "all night (don't stop)".
her superbowl stunt with justin shitterlake (wether people were offended or not) didn't help either. it just seemed as a desperate attempt for attention, that backfired on her as a performer and her musical career.
i also don't think anything she's done in recent years was as groundbreaking as "velvet rope" or even "janet." even "control" and "rhythm nation" offer a more mature listening experience. though i think she's far from over, i do think her next release will be critical in how much credit the public and the majority of her fanbase give her from now on.

The pop stuff is all good, but we need that Janet with an attitude, please.

What? I love her and all but I think she's overrated personally. I don't think she's any sort of "Icon" or in any way a challenger worthy of being called the "Queen Of Pop" as a lot of her fans say.

She's a GREAT pop star who has done very well. Outside the USA that's all she ever was. When Britney Spears can outsell her within 3 years, that's kind of embarassing.

Yep, but I think she needs some sort of turning point in her personal life to use as an inspiration for something. The break-up of her marriage had a negative effect on the music when she used it to focus on "going back in the dating game" and it came across quite juvenile.

Janet is a great pop performer but I don't think she's innovative or groundbreaking. I wouldn't even call her an artist. She's very good at what she does (or did). With her musical genes and the many years she's been doing her own thing I'd think maybe she'd be in a different place by now. In some ways it seems she's gone backwards. Anyway, I once heard her described as lazy from a dancer friend and at the time I didn't get it but now I wonder.
Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Have you guys heard the vintage funk version of "What Have You Done For Me Lately" by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings?

It's why she got the record deal, it's NOT why she was successful. Although I believe bigger things could have possibly happened to Rebbie if she was younger and more dedicated.

I am so skeptical about all the Jackson siblings 1984 output... seems like they were ALL riding the MJ Thriller wave.

That goes for all of the Jackson brothers' output, including Jermaine and the group.

Of course, this is the only way Janet could get a deal in the early 80s. I am convinced this is why they were interested in marketing her as a Jackson relative.

The best 1984 MJ sibling output was probably "Centipede" by Rebbie.

However, Janet proved everyone wrong with Control.

Well Janet was the only one that broke away from being managed by Joseph, wasn't she?

It was just a combination of things. Vocally Rebbie is better than her, but Rebbie is also 16 years older, married and had kids even then with another one to come. Janet being a funky and sassy teenager was half of the appeal to the MTV audiences. Her image worked better than a super-religious married mother by default.

I think All for You is a great album (her second best after Rhythm Nation 1814) and although Damita Jo doesn't quite cut it, it still offers some great pop songs.

I think the reason she gets bashed is because she is often pitted against other org favorites such as Madonna, turning even semi-hard core Janet fans against her.

Isn't Janet the very youngest Jackson sibling?

How doesn't that sound right?

* She broke away from Joseph, so she wasn't being handed shit like 'Two To The Power Of Love' and 'Communication'.

* She's the youngest and had more appeal image wise than her then more talented sister Rebbie, and LaToya just couldn't sing at all - err, although there are a few exceptions with her where she sounds passable.

* She had far more drive and ambition than the others, minus Michael. Having no kids or other commitments comes into that again.

The only part that I am not sure about was that she was the only Jackson to break away from Joseph in that timeframe. I thought the others did too sometime after being moving to Epic.

Sorry, not who broke away from Motown.. I'm talking about breaking away from Joseph as their manager. When did they all do that? Was Janet really the first?
