Steely Dan Appreciation Thread

I've been meaning to give the guys an appreciation thread of their own for a while now. nod

Any Steely Dan fans here? I know there are. biggrin Oh, and what are your favorite albums and songs as well?

One of my favorites is the live version of "Bodhisattva" with the drunken introduction. falloff Know what I'm talking about? Hilarious! lol

You know I'm a fan! smile My favorite album:

Also contains my favorite song, Do It Again. I also love Bodhisattva, but I've not heard the live version. I also need to get Countdown to Ecstasy. All their work contains such great musicianship. I'm gonna sound like an old man, but oh well - they just don't make that kinda music anymore.

You're 100% correct on that one though. nod

The live version is hilarious. lol I can listen to it over and over again. For both the 2:30 minute rambling, drunken intro by a trashed equipment truck driver for the band (that's the story behind it anyway) falloff and the music as well. It rocks, grooves, swings whatever you want to call it, even more than the studio version.

You have to hear it. It's on the Citizen Box Set. I have it on mp3. I wonder if I can send it to you? hmmm

You know, "favorite song" isn't really a fair question though because I really can't pick a favorite. There are too many, and it changes from week to week. biggrin

I've got but three Steely Dan albums in my collection and will get more when I have extra dough to spend. Believe it or not, I don't have Aja, but I am familiar with it. I have Pretzel Logic, Can't Buy a Thrill and A Decade of Steely Dan. Right now I'm working on building up my Todd Rundgren and Supertramp collection. Next up...Steely Dan!

Yeah, I didn't start getting into them until recently myself. And I'm glad I did. Although I already knew tons of their songs from the radio of course. I guess I just didn't appreciate them as much when I was a kid though. lol

I love "Peg". nod It's crazy how many rap artists have sampled Steely Dan though. "Peg" being one of the most recognizable ones of course. (De La Soul)

I love Steely Dan. I names my daughter Aja off my favorite album. My favorite song is Hey Nineteen. Everytime it comes on, that opening rift makes me tilt my head to the side. I really love Time Out of Mind, too.

ah.. Donald & Walter - MY BOYS.

a TRUE fan of The Dan - now approaching 20 years
(damn, has it been THAT long already??)
I continue to be awstruck & amazed by the PURE QUALITY of music that they put out. I liked most of '03's everything must go - especially green book, things i miss the most & the title track.

my favorite SD album is THE ROYAL SCAM. it has that.. "edginess" to it.
of all the solid tracks on that 1 I think I like "sign in stranger" the best.

I love ALL their albums, really, & I love virtually ALL of their songs. the 3 songs that I don't listen to, that I can name off the top of my head are

brooklyn
show biz kids
the royal scam
cousin dupree

if I had to pick ONE song - I mean if someone literally put a gun to my head & said "tell me your favorite Steely Dan track - I would probably choose

Janie Runaway.

it's a CLASSIC Steely Dan jam.

Donald's solo work is solid too, though I MUCH PREFER Kamakiriad to the VERY "poppy" (but still good) Nightfly. "tomorrow's girls", "Florida room", "snowbound" & "on the dunes" are all BRILLIANT.

yeah, that live version of "bodhishattva" is TIGHT, but I also dig
the more laid-back "here at the western world" & the mostly instrumental "true companion".

for those of y'all who haven't seen it, the dvd "Classic Albums : Aja" is also worth getting. Donald & Walter break down the genius of several of the songs on that album, & there are some interesting commentaries by those who played on that album, such as (the also brilliant) Michael McDonald.

I'm going to stop right here & right now before I spend THE NEXT HOUR writing about how much I love the music of Steely Dan.
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Yeah, I love that DVD!! Fagen is hilarious: "Uptown, Baby, Uptown, Baby..." as well as Bernard Purdie ("Another Hit Being Made"!)

I thought that part about all the different guitarists trying out for the guitar solo on Peg was fascinating...They didn't say whose track was whose, (except that Jay Graydon ended up doing the one they liked and kept.), but I read that Larry Carlton, Steve Khan, and Lee Ritenour are among all the guitarists that gave it a shot...

One of my fave songs is "Reelin In The Years". Great guitar and some of the coolest lyrics ever:

"You wouldn't know a diamond if you held it in your hands. The things you think are precious, I can't understand." And "You been tellin' me you're a genious since you were seventeen. In all the time I've known you, I still don't know what you mean. The weekend at the college didn't turn out like you planned. The things that pass for knowledge, I can't understand." That shit is priceless! Some of the slickest lyrics I've ever heard.
Other faves:

Hey Nineteen
Peg
Di It Again
SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him."
