Gay singers who were obviously gay, but never actually said they were gay at first

Thinking back to the 80's...Boy George was a big ole drag queen sleeping with the drummer, and yet somehow the general public was shocked when he said he was gay later on...just thinking of people who you kinda thought was gay and then actually did turn out to be gay/bi

Rupaul
Liberace
KD Lang
George Michael
Tevin Campbell
Elton John
Right Said Fred
Freddie Mercury
David Bowie

i don't think rupaul ever made any bones about being queer as a catfart. when you introduce yourself to the world by dressing in drag and singing a song called "supermodel" with the chorus "YOU BETTA WORK", it's a bit hard to backpeddle on your sexuality, you know?

i'm gonna need proof of that, because i remember ru from when he was an NYC east village performance artist/drag queen, and he was homolicious back then. he was on an episode of "andy warhol's 15 minutes" in his pre-fame days, and if memory serves, he went by the name "starbooty".

i don't have any tangible proof but i remember seeing several interviews with him/her where he spoke of being straight. he said drag was not a gay thing. years later he had a "coming out" interview. i think around the time of "...but i'm a cheerleader" if i'm not mistaken.

nope, cuz the wigstock movie came out at least two or three years before that flick, and ru is gay as can be in that flick. and i remember listening to ru's radio show back in '96 and he was hardly coy about his sexuality during his daily morning show. maybe waaaay back in the early-to-mid '80s, when he was doing his new-romantic/glam thing, he was all cryptosexual, but i think he came galumphing out of the closet at LEAST when he came out with "supermodel", if not a while before that.

well, just tellin' ya what i read. the interviews were definitely after his supermodel song...and he was definitely claiming to be a flaming hetero.

I had never been around any gay people until 1990 so I really didn't pick up on hardly any of the artists that were. Androgeny was a big look in the 1980s and a lot of the straight singers looked gay also.

I was shocked as hell about Freddy Mercury. I never would have dreamed that the guy from Judas Priest was gay. As far as Boy George, I didn't know what to make of him. I still don't consider him a drag queen because he never tried to give the illusion of breasts. I don't think he wore dresses either, just big ass robes and things. I knew George Michael was gay from the first moment I ever laid eyes on him in the "Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go) video. The way he danced and his gestures gave him away.

By the time RuPaul came on the scene in the early 1990s, I had been to several gay clubs and knew all the drag queen lingo that they talked. RuPaul was no surprise to me.

I'd have to agree with you, Anxiety. I don't know WHEN Ru might have claimed to be hetero, but I've read his book, Letting It All Hang Out- An Autobiography published, I believe, in '95 and judging from the pictures through the years and the text, he was out there long before he was popular enough to be interviewed on tv; I mean, at least since he was a teen. I don't think he would have claimed to be hetero! I have to say, though, that when dressed as a man, he's fine.

I wasn't aware that David Bowie was
either Homosexual or Bi-sexual, due
to his marriage to a very female
supermodel and susequent children.

I'm aware that Bowie has'played' with
this image in the past and has previously
appeared in womens clothing, but I was not
aware that it was anything more serious.

Of course, as a rather recent discoverer of
Bowie I may be wrong.

he played around with bisexuality and messing around with gender in the early to mid '70s, but over the past decade or two, he's become a confirmed family man and has a gorgeous wife and a new baby daughter...he said in interviews that in that period of his life, he considered himself a "sexual tourist" and wanted to explore gay culture, but found that it wasn't for him.

PANDURITO

I was backstage
couldn't belive my luck was in
I saw him approach
wearing the most approachable grin
When he said hello
I was surprised he spoke so politely
I said I liked the show
Well he just smiled
I guess it happens nightly
and so
I fell in love

We went to his room
he had a videocamera
I was so nervous
I had to try hard not to stammer
He said
"I'm glad you liked the show
that crowd was dope out there
tonight, alright
You wanna see some more?
Well be my guest
You can have a private performance"
I'd fallen in love

I didn't ask why
though he seemed like such a
regular guy
he said we could be
secret lovers
just him and me
Then he joked
"Hey, man!
You name isn't Stan, is it?
We should be together!"
And he was passionate
I guess I would rate
him a nine out of ten
by then
I'd fallen in love

When I asked
why have I heard so much
about him being charged
with homophobia and stuff
he just shrugged

Next morning we woke
he couldn't have been a nicer bloke
Over breakfast made jokes
about Dre and his homies and folks
Neither of us asked if or when
we would see eachother again
but I thought that was cool
'cause I was already late for school
by then
I'd fallen in love

The Night I Fell In Love (Pet Shop Boys)

No. I remember him being on the local radio in Houston, and going on and on about how gay he was (and talking about everyone he thought was gay). This was maybe two weeks after "Supermodel" was added to their playlist. He also did an appearance on Arsenio a few weeks after that, and he was asked if he ever thought about getting a sex change. He replied "no, I'm happy being a big, gay man".

Don't know where you read this, but it was pretty much BS. Ru has always been out and proud.

i'm sure a lot of the time the record companies don't want the sexuality of an artist to be confirmed, as not to alienate potential fans and have backlash from certain sectors. many people in the artists inner circle know their deal, but just keep mum about it. for instance, the love affair between boy george and jon moss wasn't publicly exposed until years after culture club broke up, although the other two in the band knew full well what was going on. a few members of klymaxx are supposed to be gay too..at least Fenderella and Bernadetted Cooper anyway. Tevin Campbell was still young when he was with Quincy Jones, but i'm sure the record execs kinda had their suspicions (in that one world video, he walks and raises his hands like a runway drag queen)

nope, cuz the wigstock movie came out at least two or three years before that flick, and ru is gay as can be in that flick. and i remember listening to ru's radio show back in '96 and he was hardly coy about his sexuality during his daily morning show. maybe waaaay back in the early-to-mid '80s, when he was doing his new-romantic/glam thing, he was all cryptosexual, but i think he came galumphing out of the closet at LEAST when he came out with "supermodel", if not a while before that.

Pet Shop Boys 'In Love' With Gay Eminem Character

04.16.2002 11:36 AM EDT

Eminem is portrayed as a homosexual in a new song by the Pet Shop Boys.
"The Night I Fell in Love," from the synth-pop duo's Release, due April 23, tells the story of a homosexual boy who falls in love with a rap star backstage at his concert and follows him to a hotel room for a "private performance."

The slow-grooving song does not reference Eminem or his Slim Shady or Marshall Mathers monikers, but the lyrics clearly spell out the star's identity.
"I said we could be secret lovers/ Just him and me," Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant sings on the tune. "Then he joked/ Hey man, your name isn't Stan, is it?/ We should be together." A later verse says, "I asked why have I heard so much about you being charged with homophobia and stuff, and he just shrugged."
Tennant, who is homosexual, said in a statement that if Eminem's music is going to be provocative, he is going to be provocative back.

"Eminem's defense of the homophobic lyrics on his albums has always been that he's not speaking as himself, he's speaking as a character, and he's representing homophobia in America," Tennant explained. "I thought it would be quite interesting to take that method and just to imagine a scene where a boy meets a famous rap star backstage at his concert and is surprised to discover he's gay and ends up sleeping with him. Just to present rap in this homosexual context. I mean, there obviously are gay rap stars."

Eminem was not available for comment, but MTV News played "The Night I Fell in Love" for his mentor and producer, Dr. Dre, who is referenced in a line from the song: "We joked about Dre and his homies."

"We needed another song anyway," Dre joked. "They just gave us a concept. Oh my God. I hope they can stand the backlash. That's funny as hell."

Although it is possible The Eminem Show, due June 4 (see "The Doc's Diagnosis: Eminem Still Crazy"), will have a retaliatory track from the rapper — he's gone after everyone from Britney Spears to Limp Bizkit in the past — Tennant was not intending to start a war of words. "I like Eminem's records," he said. "I think he's brilliant."

Release is the eighth studio album from the Pet Shop Boys, who are perhaps best known for their first single, 1985's "West End Girls." The duo's new record, which features former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr on several tracks, strays a bit from their signature style.

"The sounds we've used aren't really dance sounds," Pet Shop Boys' Chris Lowe said. "We found that the songs that we liked the most that we'd written weren't really dancey, and, having made that decision not to take dance elements, it was very liberating in terms of songwriting. It gave us a lot more freedom to experiment."

----

I wonder why Eminem is quick to go after Mariah on his new album two years later, but when PSB make a song stating a romance with a gay fan, he ain't got sh*t to say?

wink Happy! "gay" = Happy! Happy music! Thats what I was saying...

Ok sorry. Didn't meant to offend anyone. Yes... I'm making a stereotype and generalization of their 'sound'. Maybe its the way Bernard Sumner sings... shrug and some of the whole dance music thing.. combined with Bernard's voice, plus they've had some ambiguously gay songs... like 1963. I'm not knocking them. I like some of their stuff and bought "Republica" when it first came out. Ok... maybe "totally" gay is overstating it... but I won't back down from the statement that their music is at least partially "gay sounding". I'm not using gay in a derrogatory sense though, simply as an type of aesthetic.

I know you may not have been trying to go down this route, but being transgendered doesn't necessarily means one is homosexual. There are men who dress like women, but are hetero. Women who dress like men, but are hetero, etc.

I found this on a web advice column. This should be helpful for anyone trying to understand what exactly constitutes "Transgendered."

Dear Angelo,

My friend, a drag queen, told me he is having a sex change. I do not understand it, but I think it is because he is getting older and not getting enough attention as a guy. How can I stop him from making a big mistake?

Signed, Stop In The Name Of Love

Dear Stop In The Name Of Love,

Your friend may be a transsexual woman and not a drag queen. The best thing you can do is to be a supportive friend. Talk to your friend and get to know what his experience is. Here is some information that might give you some help to enter the conversation.

A transsexual woman does not want to become a woman, she is a woman. It might help you to think of your friend as a woman in a man's body. Your friend may want to be called "her." There are not only male to female transsexuals (MTF) but also female to male (FTM). Your friend may need surgery to change her male anatomy to female so that it matches her internal sense of being a woman. Getting older, not getting attention, or being a drag queen have nothing to do with that. So what causes transsexuality then? Ask yourself, how did you become gay? How do you know you are gay? It just is and you just know. It is who you are.

Imagine that you go in for routine cosmetic surgery. When you wake up, somehow you are hurting where you should not be. To your horror, you discover that there was a mistake and that your male body has been changed into a woman's. As a man, how might you feel about this? Would you now be a female just because you have female genitals? Would you feel betrayed or disgusted by your new body? How would it be to be called "she" instead of "he?" Could you live in society as the opposite sex? Would you be screaming, "but I am really a man"? A transsexual person suffers from an early age from this mismatch between mind and body. Gender identity (how we think of ourselves) is separate from our anatomy.

Sexuality is an entirely independent issue. You may be surprised that most transsexuals, like most people, identify as heterosexual. If a man is attracted to men, but identifies as a woman inside, then "'she" is straight. This becomes much more obvious after the sex change. This is not a cop out for fear of being gay. While some transsexuals may identify as drag queens for a while before they come to realize they are actually transsexual, transsexuals are not drag queens and drag queens are not transsexuals.

A drag queen is a gay cross dressor. Drag Queens are gay men that usually cross dress for fun, entertainment or work. A drag queen does not live as a woman. He does not feel he is a woman. He does not want to change his male body into a woman's. Drag queens are gay men playing with gender who like being men. There are lesbian drag kings too. Other cross dressers are heterosexual men. They dress in women's clothes for fun, entertainment, work, sexual fetishes or to access emotionally sensitive parts of themselves.

There are also intersexes and a huge variety of other fluid variations between sex, gender, and sexual identity. The word "Transgender" is often used to cover all gender variances.

Fortunately, we can choose to celebrate difference and to affirm each other as we are. If you can, tell your friend you will be there for her and try not to worry. The system has safeguards in place. Before hormones and surgery, most doctors require letters from gender therapists like me saying that the person is making the best decision for themselves with a clear mind.

It is understandable at first to feel afraid, sad and like you are losing your friend. Many people transition in midlife because it is a "now or never" issue at that point and they can no longer conform to something which is not them. They also may have developed the strength as they have gotten older to do something which is so difficult and so misunderstood. It may help to think that you will not in fact lose your friend in the end. Although much will change, your friend will still be the same person - maybe even happier.

Okay, first off, he admitted to "bisexual experimentation", which means, in essence, that he experimented with sex with men, but didn't take it any further. This is not uncommon, and doesn't make you gay. If he had CONTINUED to have sex with men, and found them attractive, then he would be gay (or bi). As it is, he is uninterested in having sex with men, and any curiosity he had about that has been satisfied.

As for transvestism, see JANFAN4L's fine post. MOST transvestites are straight men, believe it or not. Drag queens only make up a very small portion of the TV community (they are just the most visible, as most straight men do it behind closed-doors, out of the view of the public).

Hey, I could be wrong. Like I said, this girl was nuts about Adam Ant. Granted, this girl was also just plain nuts, so maybe she was just talking out her ass. Still, the guy is straight now, regardless of what he did once as a teen.

I don't think the TV thing was a major component of his personality either. Just something he did from time to time. Then again, he could have just been writing about it as the subject of the song and nothing more. Prince, I'm pretty sure, never fucked his sister, but he still wrote a tune about it. "Greta X" may just be in the same category.

Bizzare thing was, gay culture was SO underground at the time, it really did escape most people's notice. In fact, it touched off a whole "macho" trend in its wake. Most people were actually quite oblivious

i'm sure a lot of the time the record companies don't want the sexuality of an artist to be confirmed, as not to alienate potential fans and have backlash from certain sectors. many people in the artists inner circle know their deal, but just keep mum about it. for instance, the love affair between boy george and jon moss wasn't publicly exposed until years after culture club broke up, although the other two in the band knew full well what was going on. a few members of klymaxx are supposed to be gay too..at least Fenderella and Bernadetted Cooper anyway. Tevin Campbell was still young when he was with Quincy Jones, but i'm sure the record execs kinda had their suspicions (in that one world video, he walks and raises his hands like a runway drag queen)

I saw Bernadette Cooper out at a gay club in Oakland in the 80's. She wasn't hiding. She obviously wanted to be noticed. She was there with a woman that had on a drawn-in pencil moustache.

Thinking back to the 80's...Boy George was a big ole drag queen sleeping with the drummer, and yet somehow the general public was shocked when he said he was gay later on...just thinking of people who you kinda thought was gay and then actually did turn out to be gay/bi

Liberace
KD Lang
George Michael
Tevin Campbell
Elton John
Right Said Fred
Freddie Mercury
David Bowie

I don't give a s@#t about who's gay and who's not, still I want to correct the message. Freddie Mercury was Bi-Sexual who probibaly prefered men over women. It's not sure he did. He had sexual relations with both, men and women. David Bowie is also Bi-Sexual, as is Mick Jagger. They both prefer women for sure. It wouldn't surprise me when Prince also happened to be Bi-Sexual or maybe even gay. About Terence Trent D'Arby was also said he was gay, he's married to a beautiful woman now. He might be Bi-Sexual but isn't gay for sure. Some people say about Lenny Kravitz that he's gay, I don't believe he is. He might also be Bi-Sexual though, I don't know and really don't care.

Lot's of great artists are/were Bi-Sexual, not all great artists are.

I have always thought not.. but some of these lyrics people are bringing up like the one about I will be your girl or your man.... or something like that... I dunno know about that. hrmph

"....she had the cutest ass he'd ever seen. He did too, they were meant to be."
"....I will be a girl, I will be a boy, I will be your toy."

I've always thought of Prince as bisexual.

I figure he's probably bisexual(I may be wrong), but most people around here want to insist he can't possibly be anything but straight.

In all honesty, Prince fans overall may have better taste in music, but a lot behave like 12 year old *N SYNC fans.

nope, cuz the wigstock movie came out at least two or three years before that flick, and ru is gay as can be in that flick. and i remember listening to ru's radio show back in '96 and he was hardly coy about his sexuality during his daily morning show. maybe waaaay back in the early-to-mid '80s, when he was doing his new-romantic/glam thing, he was all cryptosexual, but i think he came galumphing out of the closet at LEAST when he came out with "supermodel", if not a while before that.

well, just tellin' ya what i read. the interviews were definitely after his supermodel song...and he was definitely claiming to be a flaming hetero.

You'd have to be a plank to beleive it if he did. Drag is generally a gay thing whereas transvestism is more often straight guys wanting to make like a secretary.

Andy Bell and Jimmy Somerville were open about their sexuality from the very start. The Pet Shop Boys, on the other hand, were not.

maybe because Neil Tennant is the only gay one in that duo.

Don't think so mate. And beleive me I do know.
