A few that may not be famous, but can play...

Kazumi Watanabe (fusion)
Takashi Yoshimatsu (classical)
Keiko Fujiie (classical)
Fareed Haque (classical/fusion)
(since a reviewer described Fareed as "South Asian guitarist" it gives me an excuse to list him) evillol

Stringed other than guitar:
Jake Shimabukuro (ukulele) (Don't laugh at the instrument, this guy is good.)
Tetsuo Sakurai (bass)

Ya beat me to him! Kazumi is the Man!![

In addition to more than twenty solo albums, he's played with Bill Bruford, Marcus Miller, Wayne Shorter, Jeff Berlin, Sly and Robbie, Omar Hakim, Lee Ritenour, Darryl Jones, Mike Mainieri, Tony Williams, Kenny Kikland, etc...and straddles styles, from Straight-Ahead Jazz To Rock, Fusion,Reggae, and Pop...

There's also Issei Noro of Casiopea(Fusion/Pop),

Akira Wada of the group Prism(Jazz/Rock/Fusion)

and Nguyen Le (jazz/rock/Fusion)

Akira Takasaki - he's a cult hero/legend among heavy metal guitarists. He was/is the guitarist in a band called Loudness. An awesome player who had his own specially designed guitars (like a certain purple guy we know). He fit in (technique wise) with the "hair-band" musicians, who were some of the best players in the business.

I'm sure you can check out some of their stuff on Amazon.com.

Oh yeah, there's also Harry K. Kody from Shotgun Messiah. He was another bad-ass on guitar - lots of Ibanez whammy-bar abuse. The band was supposedly from Sweden, but all the members "looked" Asian. In fact, I think the lead singer's name was Vinny San or somethin' like that.

Harry K. Kody and Shotgun Messiah were part of the last breed (late '80's/early 90's) of "hair-bands". They had a few videos on MTV's Headbanger's Ball, back in the day.

RocknRollDave

Aziz Ibrahim , who briefly replaced John Squire in the Stone Roses, but who has much more successfully played alongside Ian Brown. Very inventive guitarist, distinct Asian influence on his playing. Once played with Simply Red, though, so he ain't perfect!!

Yep, he's the cat that I was going to mention. I have one Loudness album. He's no joke. Their hair was through the roof too!
