Horns in songs that ain't got horns

On the current tour, there are few (if any) songs that aren't peppered with new horn riffs (aside from during the acoustic set). After seeing the show for the second time in San Antonio, I have to say that I really LIKE Sign O The Times with the new horn part in it. (For those of you who haven't seen the tour, it's the same live version that Prince played at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony). I don't know what it is about the horns in that song...just makes it sound more urgent and important. As opposed to laying in horns in songs like "Kiss" and "Controversy," which doesn't do much for me, I really dig SOTT with horns.

What older songs with new horn parts do you like or dislike?

I have never particularly liked horn arrangements added to 'I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man'.

The rendition performed on the SOTT concert movie is amazing....no, in fact, its better than that! I'm yet to hear the new arrangement.

You do as I say

I enjoyed the hell out of the new tour and the horns were O.K. but I would prefer if they were gone.

Actually, I wish he had never gotten into horns in the first place. He needs to go back to synthesizers exclusively like the "old" Prince.

Gotta agree that the current arrangement of SOTT sounds great, if not better than the original.

The songs Ive heard with the horns have really been good.

Then it would hardly be Musicology would it DUH? Yeah why dontcha wish for drum machines and computers all round then it wouldn't be real music at all .. in fact he could just use samples of guitar and his voice and there'd be no need to have a band at all...

but that's just my opinion

I TOTALLY AGREE! I love this arrangement. It does more to the song. The original has always sounded empty to me. Though I like the original, the bass and the horns in this version kicks major ass.

Back in the day, Prince used drum machines and real drums. The synthesizer sounded better than the horns. His computer generated music was far from the shit that the "kindercare" generation is doing today. He never used samples. Listen to the "1999" album and compare it to the hip hop artists. That album was full of power and their songs are all stripped down with a weak drum machine and an old record mixed in. His drum machines were strong but their's just barely beat.

She explained that she's working the bass as a percussion-instrument, as opposed to the tonal approach.
It probably wasn't fit to leave her standing about for 1:19 smile
