When I heard that CDs given away at the concerts would count as official sales,I knew that it would cause alot of controversy. It'll be interesting to see if other artists follow Prince's lead and if their record companies will approve.

Gas isn't music related, and therein lies the difference. We're talking about a concert, not gas or a happy meal or some washing powder.

a) it doesn't matter if it's music related or not. there's no rules. IF it's wrong and unfair, then it's wrong and unfair.... it's 2 SEPERATE products. there's a big difference between me going to see 'prince play the hits live' with my girlfriend as he's a great showman / memories of back in the day, etc and me deciding to go out and by his new album (which i hate - personal opinion).

he's doing the tour to promore his new album, by 'playing the hits', therefore shouldn't it be MY choice after he's entertained me if i WANT his new album....

b) if by your thinking it DOES have to be music related, then how about SONY decide they NEED B2k's next record to break chart history - to get a buzz going,etc... they decide that EVERY SONY Music related Electronic Device the cost of the new album is hidden in it..... B2k's record is number one around the globe for a whole year.... does that make it better...?

FYI - this has aleady happened. When Sony launched SACD (Super Audio CD) they gave you one free SACD disc out of a choice of 5. 'completley free', or in other words hidden in the cost. these DID count as official sales.....
U say that u want a choice 2 buy the cd or not. Well u and i don't have a choice on what's played on the radio and 2 me that shit 'aint fair. So P is playing the game of how does he get his new music out without worrying if it does well on the charts or not. Don't hate the playa, hate the game!

Do the math. P's tix are only $75 on the floor. Look at P's past tix prices and u will see that he is giving away the cd 4 free. Now the language that is being used that the cd price being built in2 the tix price is 2 help hype the concert and 4 those cd's 2 count sales wise. He's hittin 2 birds with 1 stone. Now if David Bowe would have done it they would b praising him 4 his innovative fortitude but since it's P it's viewed as controversial, accused of fatting up sales and shit! months ago he was'nt relevant. But cream always rises 2 the top. I could care less if every1 tries 2 copy. The majority of these teeny bopper acts will not b able 2 sustain a tour with the positive reviews that P's getting 4 a year or 2 and b able 2 record good music every year. They will burn out! But that would only leave the tried and true, real talent people. Like Prince, G.Clinton, and others who can't get they new music played. School's in suckas! Try and keep up with Prince's pace of output and live shows and u suckas will fall! All hail 2 the Party Man. THE NEW POWER GENERATION HAS JUST TAKEN CONTROL!

Bart here would be complaining that Prince never does anything
generous or creative like this for his fans.

- Agreed. As much as I´d like to see him on charts, I think it´s two separate worlds. Most people that only go to his concerts to see the great showman he is or to listen to ´Purple Rain´ wouldn´t end buying the album. And Bart is right. If Jacko did it, people would accuse him of cheating.
But I dont think Prince is cheating. I think it´s the record system.

Well, we've already had this discussion on the org! I said there would be interesting ramifications from this decision to include album giveaways on the charts, but did you lot believe me? Oh nooo...!

Charts are made on the albums sold that week, not cumulative. An act would have to do quite a few sell-out dates at large arenas to make an impact on the charts - as they say in the article, the last Prince concert added only 12,600 to that weeks totals and that wouldn't have effected his chart position - and most acts wouldn't be able to keep up a tour that intensive for very long.

If they can measure the difference between how many were given away at concerts and how many were sold at retail outlets, then there's not a problem - they can just have a total figure with the giveaways in brackets - and still be able to guage how popular an album is.

I like how they say 'heritage' acts - a polite way of saying 'over the hill' acts! No wonder established acts like Prince have a hard time making waves if they are regarded as ye olde heritage 'dinosaur' acts by the record companies! Somewhat insulting! Like saying I am a fan of vintage motorcars rather than just what happens to be good!

"Ye Olde Red Corvette..."

"I'm sorry, Mr. Prince. You are over the hill and we are going to have to put you down...It's for the best, we need to make room for the Beyonce's and Usher's of this world - you know, happening, with it, acts. You have a new big album on the way, you say? C'mon, now, that's not very likely, is it?!"

You cant compare Prince with Beyonce and Usher....
The road you choose to walk in this life, is a road that leads to the next.....

Too bored by it to post.

Unimpressed by that slew of HM clichés that is supposed to pass for a guitar solo, not impressed by OutKast and Alicia inducting him (that's the best they coudl come up with?), annoyed at Prince's speech. Don't even pretend that his induction was a surprise, the rest of the inductees this year were piss-poor. And the R&R HoF has lost plenty of credit by not inducting worthy artists like Kraftwerk.

Yeah, Prince selling out well-promoted concerts that focus on the hits -- big surprise there, huh?

Thanks to creative accounting fraud and a label forcing him to do lots of promotion on the lamest of shows. Album features no decent songs or tunes or ideas.
