Prince #29 on RS "Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time"

Prince is # 29 in Rolling Stone magazine's cover story about "The Immortals: The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time".

The story is laid out so other artists write about theese fifty names and it's Amir Thompson (?uestlove) that's writin' about Prince.

The first spots are as expected reserved for The Beatles, Elivs and The Rolling Stones. Other names inlclude: Michael Jackson #35 (by Anthony La Reid), David Bowie #39(by Lou Reed), Sly And The Family Stone #43 (by Don Was), Public Enemy #44 (by Adam Yauch) and Run-D.M.C #48 (by Chuck D)

EVERY music magazine seems to do this kind of thing @LEAST once a year;it's old!

Throw in the obivious: The Beatles, Stones, Dylan, etc.

Throw in some intentionally stupid picks to create controversy;

Throw in some current acts so not to alienate your young readers (although those picks will seem downright stupid in 5-10 years;

Throw in some little heard acts to sound hip & "switched on"



The only opinion that matters is your own.
These lists are created to just give magazine writers something to do because the mags lack real writing. And sales from those who cant form tastes of their own.

I'm surprised that they even acknowledged Prince. They always seem to not give him the respect he deserves musically. He should have been higher if ya ask me. Rolling Stone Magazine is nothing but a piece of crap now. I use to like it back when real musicians were on the covers.

These list are bogus at best. I form my own opinions don't need nobody telling me who's great and who ain't. Prince is better than most on the list. And no Parliament/Funkadelic, Supremes, Temptations, EWF...PLEEASSE!!

this inconsistency pops up in discussions every time rolling stone have the arrogance to do a "greatest guitarists/albums/songs/singles of all time" list.

Take it for what it's worth. It's their opinion. Sure they try to act like it's based in some kind of fact but it's not. When you get your own magazine you can proclaim the true great ones.

1.) I like Nirvana but if the guy did not blow his head off ( probalbly because of that witch of a wife he had)they would be doing the same thing as most of those Seattle bands( name one) which is (you fill this in). Guns + Roses had as much influence in as much time, let Axel Rose blow his head of and think what would have happened.

2.) Not only is Prince to low but I rarely support M.J. and Maddona but compared to some of those artists they need there rank to be boosted also.
Ah it never fails though, Springstein is ahead of everyone. The glorified John Cougar Mellencamp. Who by the way is much better.

I dont think you really really can rate artists. Do you? I mean they all have their strengths and their weaknesses. I love the Beatles, but they definatly could not dance like JAmes Brown or Michale Jackson, and I dont think anyone could play instruments like Prince. I dont know... Just a thought. What do you think?

I think it's a friggin joke that people actually refer to these kind of lists as "white lists" then bitch about not having guys like James Brown near the top. Just what exactly are you trying to prove here? That your "black lists" mean more than the "white lists" out there? Seems pretty hypocritical to me.

I guarentee 99% of all of you out there that rag on the Beatles as being overrated have never heard jack from them and just assume that "I wanna hold your hand" is the style of everything they've created.

No band in history had the kind of influence on culture, music, music engineering, recording, and style than the Beatles. No band had more of a change in music direction than the Beatles. They were around the US for just 7 years, people...and toured for only 3 years in the US.

Yes, part of the personna is overlyhyped because of the massive influx of teenage obsession with them, however, they deserve every single accolade they get. The fact that they played all the instruments, wrote all musical composition, and all lyrics says something. (yes, I know Prince does that too)

I am a huge prince fan, but let's be serious, he never had close to the effect and influence on music as people like the Beatles or Elvis Presley or Bob Dylan....and even though Elvis didn't right much, it still doesn't take away from him creating the style of music that was created, cause he was responsible for that. If some of you that bashed them had any idea about the history of music, you'd know that nearly all Motown acts didn't right there own music. James Brown didn't right alot of his stuff either folks. I'm positive you don't know that Stevie Wonder is a huge Bob Dylan fan. Prince loves Joni Mitchell, who is from the Bob Dylan mold also. See where this is going? It's called influence.

as for Nirvana. It's not for everyone, but they were something that took me out of the same hole that alot of people were in when music was really stale. Few bands accounted for such a dramatic change in popular music than they did.

You can all hang out in your own little world and keep your close minded ideals. The true music fans out there will give anything a chance and not discredit something they know nothing about. Prince is incredible, but when it comes to music, you cannot take your opinions seriously unless you've experienced all the music with an open mind.

My response to this is: James Brown wasn't popular until after all 3 of them so I don't know how he influenced any of them. Chuck Berry came after Elvis and didn't have nearly the staying power of any of them (no metamorphisis). You may have an argument there for Little Richard though he was out about the same time as Elvis. You can also say Jerry Lee Lewis was about the same as Little Richard on some accounts but I seriously doubt you would give him any credit cause he's white. Little Richard never changed his music at very much so you can't say he had more influence than any of the big 3. I will say this, I have never been a big Rolling Stones fan. I like Prince more than them, but I can't argue with what they did in rock and roll

If you want to get real technical, the Spanish created the present day guitar and influenced black blues artists 60 years ago, so
