G2P - my two pence worth

I reckon this is all about control, pure and simple.

P wants control of everything, we all know that, and I think if I was in his situation I would too.
I would want the bootlegging to STOP.
I would probably go about it in a completely different way mind you, I'd be a lot friendlier!!, and I'd go after the real pirates.

BUT...

I reckon that, what with 2004 being this "big year" and all, I think that he's finally gonna shift some stuff out of his vault. On his terms. In proper quality. Straight to us.

So he's just getting rid of the competition.

Misguided perhaps, but it's his music after all, and I understand his concern at the pirates getting fat ripping off the fans (lets face it, bootlegs are generally a rip-off).

Anxiety

If he releases "unreleased material" that's been bootlegged, the bootlegging of that material will stop. Period. Full-stop.

Even the people who HAVE the material from bootlegs will buy the stuff when it's released officially...and the equation won't work the other way around (unless the bootleggers find longer or alternate versions, of course).

The only way to beat the boots is to satisfy the demand. The way Prince is going about it now, he's not only alienating fans, but he's making the bootlegs look more tantalizing and naughty with every incident.

They're not, I know. But maybe in his mind they are.

Prince isn't that crazy. He knows there's no competition, and even if he felt that way he should know that most of us would still buy whatever he lets out of the vault anyway. Case in point CRYSTAL BALL. Any true collecter of bootlegs (myself included) already had 99% of what was on that 3 CD set, but we wanted to hear it in it's ture clarity. I hate to say it but he's just really being a ture asshole this time.

Prince & his crew have/had a valid reason to shut down G2P.
It could be argued/said that G2P "promotes" bootlegs, which are illegal.

It's not illegal to have reviews or discuss bootlegs...and it's difficult to make a case against the legality of trading recordings as well. Selling, o.k I see his legitimacy in preventing that but I think he's pretty much pissing into the wind...BOOTLEGS WILL NOT GO AWAY UNLESS HE RELEASES EVERYTHING LIKE PEARL JAM DO...no matter how many people he threatens. shrug
