I got both of these albums on Christmas Eve (courtesy of a good member of the org) so I can finally join in this debate. Or maybe not; I haven't yet fully absorbed either of them (i'm not yet at the satge when I can recall every track or recognise them instantly, say) but I think I prefer the Black Album so far. Both are funky, but TBA is more so, and the bass solo on 2 Nigs... and the guitar solo in Rockhard... both kick arse. There's a lot of great guitar playing on Lovesexy but it tends to be buried in the mix somewhat. TBA's raw sound suits it but Lovesexy is a more ambitious album that needs a more slick production, IMO. Plus I think When 2 R in Love fits better on TBA; its more distinctive there but on Lovesexy it doesn't stand out at all.

Its close, but I'm going with The Black Album. Its more raw and Lovesexy has that Glam Slam crap on it. All the gals say hoe if your man's giving up the gold. All the fellas say ruff if you're only giving up the bone. | |

Lovesexy is very slick, while The Black album is very demo-ish. I think the different "production values" were not by accident, but by design. As garnis said, Black is raw, Lovesexy refined. It would have been the perfect double-LP for a Gemini like P, and a thematic arc for the struggle b/w spirituality and sexuality that permeated his 80's work.. But that's a matter of opinion. Actually, Lovesexy and Graffiti Bridge go more hand in hand. GB feels and sounds like the spiritual extension of Lovesexy. | |

There is something very unique in the mixing of the black album. I dont know what it is, but sound quality is strange and I like it. I go threw phases with them both so its hard to say what I like better. | |
