Ever get a P lyric totally wrong?

How many of you have experienced singing along to Prince's song, SO confident you had the lyrics down, just to realize waaay later that you were totally wrong? This has happened to me on a number of occasions (helped, of course, by the fact that English is not my first language), and it always totally cracks me up when I finally learn what he is REALLY saying. smile I can only remember one of these now, and not at all the funniest, but I promsise you there have been MANY:

For years and years I always thought his line in "I Would Die 4 U" was "And If you're evil I'll forgive you by the fire" (imagining him forgiving his girlfriend in a romantic moment on the bear rug in front of a cosy fire)...I could't help laughing when I found out it is by and by! How boring in comparison, there goes my nice, romantic imagery... wink

Now to the point of my thread: How about you guys, would anyone like to share any similar lyrical "bloopers"? Could be fun, in a nice, civil non-judgemental way on a boring monday afternoon. smile

i thought it was

"dearly beloved..we are gathered here today to get rid of this thing called lice...eclectic word lice that means forever and that's a mighty long time...but lemme tell ya, there's somethin' else...the afterbirth..."

nuts

I never knew, what the chorus of '1999' was ("oops, out of time")

I never knew the third line of the chorus of 'Kiss'("Ain't no particular sign I'm not compatible with")

I never knew any of the lyrics, of the first verse of 'Let's go crazy'

I never knew the second line of the chorus of 'U got the look'("sho' 'nuff to be cookin'")

I thought he said "You will find" (not "You are fine") in 'Cream'

Damn! Right to this very second I thought the same thing.

Also, for years I thought "You're just a sinner I am told
Be your fire when you're cold" in I would die 4u was something like:
"you just as in am I and told me if I win you go" nuts C'MON, ADMIT IT, THAT'S WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE!

Actually it seems, we're both wrong

Kiss
U don't have 2 be beautiful
2 turn me on
I just need your body baby
From dusk till dawn
U don't need experience
2 turn me out
U just leave it all up 2 me
I'm gonna show u what it's all about

U don't have 2 be rich
2 be my girl
U don't have 2 be cool
2 rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your

Kiss

U got to not talk dirty, baby
If u wanna impress me
U can't be 2 flirty, mama
I know how 2 undress me (Yeah)
I want 2 be your fantasy
Maybe u could be mine
U just leave it all up to me
We could have a good time

U don't have 2 be rich
2 be my girl
U don't have 2 be cool
2 rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your

Kiss

Yes
I think I wanna dance
Gotta, Gotta
Little girl Wendy's parade
Gotta, gotta, gotta

Women not girls rule my world
I said they rule my world
Act your age, mama (Not your shoe size)
Not your shoe size
Maybe we could do the twirl
U don't have 2 watch Dynasty
2 have an attitude
U just leave it all up 2 me
My love will be your food
Yeah

U don't have 2 be rich
2 be my girl
U don't have 2 be cool
2 rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your

Kiss

I knew there was an extra sylabble between 'i'm' and 'compatible'!

Also, there's the age-old mystery about the lyrics of 'Sister':

**'She's the reason for my, uh, sexuality'
**'She's the reason for my, bi-sexuality'
**'She's the reason for my, uh, bi-sexuality'

'Sister', I think the DTT site has it correct ...

'She's the reason for my, uh, sexuality'

The standard chorus has 'more compatible' (as confirmed by the WB musical transcription issued for the song and two album booklets) .. but he doesn't sing (or scream) 'more' in the final chorus.

One of my favourite tracks is I could never take the place of your man. For years I sung along with Prince, "She was standin by the FIRE, Hmmm she was looking alright".

Then just this past weekend from out of nowhere, she was standing by the BAR. I heard it clear as day and couldn't believe it!

My friends baby sitter back in the day thought he was saying "she's the reason for my homosexuality" and swore this as proof that Prince was gay. rolleyes

For years I mistakenly thought it was "four letter words were seldom heard with such dignity and pride" But after hearing the live version of Joy in Repetition, I realised it was "...will not be heard on this stage tonight"
I also thought for years that in Days of Wild, he sang "all you silent motherfuckers" but since the live single I know it's "silent Americans ". Silly me, huh? wink

1. Until very recently actually, I always thought in the 2nd verse of Baby I'm A Star he was saying:

"Hey, take a little sound...tell me do you like what you hear?"

As opposed to the real words..."take a listen".

2. When it came out... (and this is more significant)... in Raspberry Beret I was singing...

"And if it was warm, she wouldn't wear it much more"

when actually there is no word "it" in there. It just seemed to me it needed another syllable rythmically. Of course that changes the meaning (I guess I figured if it was hot she wouln't want to wear the beret, as opposed to the real meaning...she wears the beret and very little else!!!)

I was pretty naive smile.

P.S. This topic is great!

P.P.S I still think that the "Baby but I are" line in Baby I'm A Star is dumb... talk about poetic license!!! That sounds like some lame white-bread person trying to do a very poor imitation of what he thinks "black english" sounds like!

In The Continental, I thought "Why settle for the sun..." was "Bixexual for a start".
They're not even that similar and it makes no sense but I sang it anyway for years.

I always thought that the lyric in anotherloverholeinyohead was this

U need another lover
Like U need a hole in yo’ head (Baby, baby)
U know there ain't no other
That can a doody in yo’ bed (Yeah, yeah)

Now when I first heard that I thought "now's that how you impress women"

Had a classic one on Firday, not me but the mrs.

We were driving to friends and listening to live at the aladdin, when my mrs turned to me and said, "did he used to be in the band or something?". I didn't have a clue what she was talking about and asked her who, thinking maybe Eric Leeds or Maceo. She says, "Dick Wade, did he used to play with Prince?". I was completely puzzled for a few seconds, then the penny dropped. Prince was asking, "who in this house knows about the Quake!".

I don't think I have stopped chuckling since.
