Diamonds & Pearls Tour

So I've never really taken a deep dive into this tour because while I like the album, I've always felt it was lacking in substance and was just a grandeous way of Prince saying "I still got it".

Nevertheless, I gave his performance at Earl's Court in 92 a full watch and godt damn is he on fire!

-

I know people are divisive on Rosie but I could watch them on stage together for hours and never get bored. Their voices were made for each other and you can feel the respect he had for her on stage as a vocalist.

-

While this is far from my favorite era it was interesting to watch this concert knowing just what the 90's had in store for him; that he was truly moving on from his decade reign of the 80's. I loved the flashiness and non-stop energy of the show, however I will say I don't quite get the sense of unity in the band that you would expect. It makes the tightness of the 93-95 NPG era that much more special.

-

Any thoughts on this tour?

It was my first time seeing him in the flesh, so very special because of that. Saw 2 x London (including the one that leaked on video) and 1 x Glasgow (my favourite gig of all time - he spent chunks of it just staring at me, and I got his guitar pick).

Loved these shows. And my favourite Prince look of all time remains that Yellow outfit with the Purple Buttons he wore at the beginning of the gigs. He looked spectacular. I’m a straight male, but holy crap, he was gorgeous.

I think it was that performance that made me think P looked quite upset, not having fun as opposed to most of his other video shows. I was quite shocked at the time that they wouldn't release the tour on video. I realized that the trend was for music videos compilations and that both may be a little too much for the market, but not even an edited promo concert to sell to TV channels? I mean it was a crazy show, and he didn't even tour the US, so you'd think they'd have tried to capitalize a little more on it...

This was the first time I went to see Prince, too; a couple of the shows at Earl's Court. They were fun and, at the time, I remember being blown away by the spectacle...watching the videos back now, it feels as much an all surface show as the later Purple Rain shows did. Don't know why...just my appreciation of them now, I guess. Still, they were fun at the time.

I was 14 when the Diamonds and Pearls album was released and it made me a lifelong fan. Back then, particularly in the UK, this concert was the hot ticket. It's an extravaganza, ideal for cementing the approval of a new generation of fans, which is what Prince achieved, particularly in Europe in the early 90s.

Viewed through today's lens there are some dated elements, mostly the style of rap used, but nobody thought that in 91/92. And that 'Thieves in the Temple' segment remains eternally killer.

I'm a big fan of the Diamond & Pearls album/era so I've always been drawn to the tour. Overall, I think it was an excellent tour...and +1 to those epic Thieves In The Temple performances.

The first time I saw Prince was in the huge open air Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam in 1990 and what I mostly remember about it is how it was raining all the time and how the lighters flashed during The Question of U. (One of the few times the rain wasn't pouring down.)
I wasn't a big fan of the D&P album, but when it was announced that he was going to do several arena shows rather than stadiums (in total, 1 in Belgium, 6 in Holland) I was excited enough to go to all of them. (Other fans saw even more.) So I guess this was the first time I really saw Prince without being distracted by huge crowds and bad weather, in other words: I actually saw the concerts.
What do I think of them? Pretty impressive with Mayte and Diamond & Pearl dancing, a bed with Prince and Diamond and Pearl flying over the audience during Insatiable followed by Gett Off, he was really doing everything to live up to his image of a sex symbol; Sexy MF was introduced during this tour and he had the whole audience souting: you sexy motherfucker! The single came out during the tour and if became a big hit.
One thing I really liked was when he played Damn U for the first time. I liked it from the beginning, the album version was never as great as the live version.
But it was the end jam, 1999, Baby I'm a Star, Push, that really was the climax. Sometimes with Rosie singing Aretha's Dr. Feelgood with Prince on the git-tar. How can you not love that
(Edit: the more I write, the more typos I make.)

I love the Earl's Court D&P show too. I watch it every now and then, skipping over the Game Boyz (no offense - really). They just look so dated. Although I'm no fan of P's mushroom hairdo, lol. Regardless, it's funny how most of P's stuff can look so timeless to me. The Game Boyz's dancing/rapping was all the rage back then, but I hate watching it now. It's a great show, though, even getting good reviews. And I love Rosie- when she opens the show, "Precious Lord.." loooove. I could also watch P and Rosie together all day. I am definitely Team Rosie smile (BTW, I went to work conventions at Earl's Court for years. It was torn down around 5 yrs ago to build a high rise luxury condo building).

I absolutely loved this tour, coming hot on the heels of the Nude tour, it was so different and elaborate. The precious Lord intro following by Prince’s arrival via the space ship in that amazing yellow suit followed a blazing version of Thunder is something I will take the my grave such is the memory embezzled in my head.
Daddy Pop was a blast and up next came D&P, the duet with Rosie was stunning and Prince was on piano about 5 feet away from me. OMG OMG!!!!

All in all a top 3 tour for me ( in addition to W2A and ONA ) and I submit Prince made it extra elaborate as MJ was touring Dangerous and that too was spectacular and I saw both shows 20 days apart in Dublin
1992 what a year.

Btw Rosie was incredibly amazing, I had anticipated she would staying subsequent tours for years such was her brilliance, up there with Queen Shelby J and one could see Prince deeply respected Rosie as he did Shelby

As always, while starting the D&P tour in Japan and Australia, Prince was already premiering material of his next album; making Sexy M.F. an integral part of his performance. By then the bootleg circuit was so quick that the fans in Europe already had the JP live performances and could hear what was coming their way.

Good times.

And the single video for Sexy M.F. was released before his second stop in The Netherlands, so I had the cover printed on a t-shirt and could have sold it many, many times.

Can't put it into words, but somehow I felt even back then there was something "off" about Prince. I was already a hardcore fan, saw him before and attended a couple of shows in Paris in July 1992. Don't want to get morbid, but that was the very first time I wondered if perhaps he was into something. I don't mean his "physical performance", he was still doing splits and running a high energy non-stop show. It's more about his playful mood, or the joy let's say he used to evoke - there was something (to me) missing.

There is no official D&P concert DVD. The show people here are talking about watching, is a bootleg.

I'm in the US, so I didn't catch the official tour. I did see the Jan. 11 show at Glam Slam and another D&P show at Paisley Park on Jan. 27. Both were professionally filmed. The live footage from the NC2U video was shot at the Jan. 27 show. At an afterparty for the Glam Slam show at Paisley Park, studio versions of My Name Is Prince, Sexy MF, The Continental, and Damn U were played by the DJ. Prince played again at the afterparty, but was mostly instrumental stuff. Terence Trent D'Arby and Carmen Electra were at the party.

Paisley Park did show the Diamonds and Pearls video from Jun. 15 in London in 2017. I know an edited bootleg version exists, but they showed the full show.

And let's not forget Carmen Electra as opener. I am still scarred.

Thankfully, that didn't happen at the two shows I attended!

There needs to be! And the Prince fans would appreciate having the option to buy Prince DVD Video Concerts from 1978 - 2016! And Music Videos from all his albums and associate albums! πŸ˜ƒββœ¨πŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸ’Ώ

I saw the D&P tour and it was awesome. Rosie is a very talented singer and I love all her collaborations with Prince. The album is great! I have no complaints about it. I still listen to it from start to finish on a regular basis.

many of these shows were filmed professionally for the big screen at the concert. It would be great to see a curated diamonds and pearls tour concert video from these sources (with a personal preference for the Epic Australian shows razz )

This was my first time seeing prince

Recently got a bootleg of the earls court show and well it's ok, but musically not very ambitious.

The band sound nice, the horns are good, but it's not the most imaginative.

A lot of songs from this album get on my nerves more than I thought they would too lol

Not heard d&p or symbol albums in years

After seeing Prince live on the Nude Tour for the first time, I was a little disappointed. I was expecting something like lovesexy or sign the times. The D&P shows were finally a real Prince concert for me that I have a lot of great memories of. Sexy MF, Cream or Thieves in the Temple alone would be great!
