I love both these albums
In fact in 1987 I was 15 and the Joshua Tree was played over and over and over...I loved it.

It was prince who? For me then, my tastes have changed a lot.
Back then, duran duran, Pet shop boys, aha and U2 were top of my list.

One question, I wonder if there is a U2 forum, discussing what should and should not should be on the SDE?
Plus, the Joshua Tree 'vault tracks are not quite in the same league right?

No Adam and the Ants! I was outraged! - there are some fantastic albums on that list, though.

I adored Adam, and then I adored Prince! And both adored Vanity, of course...one degree of separation...and then Adam recorded Manners and Physique with Andre Cymone! It all links!

Maybe yes, maybe no - I was surprised he made the top ten, to be honest. In fact - had he still been alive, I doubt he would have. Also, I do think they chose the wrong album to represent him...I know, I know: biggest selling, iconic, tightly wound, purposeful album and all...it's just...there are better 1980s Prince albums tha Purple Rain.

Six out of the top ten list are British.

The Joshua Tree is one hell of a great album.

ABC, Dire Straits, Paul Simon and The Stone Roses in a top ten of best albums of the eighties ?

Weird choice. Although I really love these albums and even have them.

-

Something else... is the album Purple Rain better than Thriller ?

Forget about sales and numbers...

Think about that.

Thriller is a pure Pop album (a perfect Pop album). Purple Rain is a journey. From a artistic and musically standpoint it's better. However, you can't deny the cultural impact Thriller had on the world to this day. The best selling record of all time. Purple Rain made the color Prince's signature, also to this day.

But correct me if I'm wrong. Thriller didn't come out of the gates straight ahead. Wasn't "The Girl is Mine" the first single? And in 1982, the album 1999 made a hell a lot more impact on the music scene. That production is revolutionary even for today's standard, think of the impact it must have made in 1982. I believe village Voice ranked it higher in polls in 1982.

By 1983 MJ came out with the videos and visuals and swept the whole world. 8 grammys etc etc. Prince only walked away with 2 grammys for PR in 1985.

Ghee wiz, I wonder why more people voted for an album that sold more and that was promoted with an actual world tour and that was feted by the band mere years ago through yet another world tour.

Nah.

Considering how P hasn't been able to stay off a magazine cover since his death, I'd say he's being rated just right. Besides, he still made the list at least.

They are both classics. Also, popularity is what counts in the stupid muic inductry award shows. U2 won it hands down.

And Prince being able to strum an acoustic guitar doesn't mean his acoustic guitar songs are better than U2's songs. I don't even like U2 and I think this thread is stupid. Music is not a competition and the idea that one guys write better songs than every one else is silly. He didn't. The idea that one guy is CAPABLE of so much doesn't mean he outdid everyone else in every single thing he did. Those awards are not given based on someone's raw musical ability, they're based on how many people the reached. U2 reached way more people that year than Prince.

Ah - all done tongue in cheek. It was a simple coment on the manufactured coincidence, nothing more that a moment of frivolity is all. I dtill don't like Joshua Tree U2, though. wink

Listened to the album ''Thriller'' once more.

Funny enough, I barely ever listen to ''Purple Rain'' (album).

What a stunning album ''Thriller'' is.

I understand why Susan Rogers so often said that Prince was in 'competition' with Michael.

Rightfully so at that moment.

Seemed like a two way thing - given the reaction to 1999.

I never enjoyed Thriller, nor Bad. Off The Wall is a terrific album. In fact - much to my embarrassment, given the very simple nature of the song, The Way You Make Me Feel was the only song of the 80s, of MJ's, that I really enjoyed. Billie Jean is a very good song, too, but the rest just seemed to be trying to hard...just like Purple Rain, in many regards.

OMG

''Off The Wall'' is indeed far far better. I do agree (imho of course).

Thing is, you get older.

And after a few decades (really!) you start to relisten to these albums you once disliked or skipped for various reasons.

And then you start to listening with 'other ears', less prejudiced, another mindset, a more musical knowledge so to speak. Also the remasters sometimes pulled me over to give it a 'new' spin.

At least, my taste in music got way much brighter and curious with age.

Prince remained big, but moved a bit to the side. There is just so much to discover.

''Invinceable'' ? naaah. Not worth it. The rest yes.

I like ''Victory'' though. wink

That Michael and Mick track is so good.

I always thought they put as less bass in there as possible to do a Prince thang.

Besides, I'm sure Mick had some stories to tell to Michael about Prince... just imagine. wink

Both of 'm laughing (Mick chuckels, Michael giggles and says with a high voice ''Oh Mich, you're so mean'') with that rolling Stones opener.

I love MJ but I just can't seriously compare Thriller to Purple Rain or 1999. The songs just aren't interesting enough. Prince just seems to be on another level of creativity and craftsmanship. I just think of songs like All the Critics, Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry... it's just so far ahead of the level MJ was at that it seems silly to even compare.

Still Don't Stop Til, Rock with you, baby be mine etc are all time jams.

I've been rewatching some of these award events around 1986-1988. Man, did Prince not fit that crowd at all. And everyone else looked like dorks in those dresses. Look for instance at the presentation of album of the year during the 1988 awards. When they zoom in the artists. Don't tell me anyone looked sharper than Prince in that moment. And you can't tell me the business or the crowd was ready for S☮️TT at that time. It hardly get any applause or cheering in that grammy 1988 show.

And what was the deal with Diana Ross? She held some of these shows. Why was she the big name during those years? I'm also counting the AMA's.

I sort of get this, yes...Thriller and Bad sound safe - like Diamonds and Pearls sounded in 1991 - 1999 and Purple Rain didn't sound safe, they sounded interesting. To these ears, at least.
