When Prince met the rabbi: Singer's spiritual awakening detailed in 'This Thing Called Life' Book

https://tinyurl.com/y4qhyqff

Editor’s note: The following is an excerpt from Neal Karlen’s “This Thing Called Life,” recounting the writer’s decades-long relationship with Prince and the singer’s evolution from “Dirty Mind” provocateur to Brother Nelson of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

He would really begin to learn, or care, about other people and their needs starting around age 40. He gave away instruments and computers. He funded libraries and school lunches. He gave a million dollars a year to the Minneapolis Urban League. And he didn’t care that his philanthropic efforts, even though they dwarfed most celebrities’, were kept as quiet as if they were his most lethal secrets.

Weird this is the official book thread but ok. Only a few chapters in, all i got to say so far is it's very uncomfortable, i can hear some fans blowing a gasket over some of this..

I don't know who the author is, and every snip I've read about the book makes my skin crawl. That whole thing w/ the rabbi is just bizarre. Even for Prince.

I just ordered mine... So yeah...it's probably a book you have to read yourself to talk about.

You don't know who Neal Karlen is?

Who are you people?

LOL, rolling on the floor.

I think you have to be a long time Prince fan to know who Neal Karlen is.

Find it also unbelievable some people never heard of him.

wink

I haven't completed the book and I see already I'll have to go back over it a second time because some parts I didn't understand. I will say Neal did not like his dad, seems a lot of those wee hour conversations were about his dad. And I don't think i want to begin those old conversations that are going to come up again now with ammunition.

Okay first that rabbit began to talk... my best friend left me.

Second, I really don't recognize Neal's name off hand. I don't mean to imply he's not credible or anything. I just don't know him.

for anyone who doesn't know who Neal is, he's absolute slime.

releasing private phone calls of Prince, do you honestly think Prince allowed him to record these phone calls?

I cant see how anyone can take one word of this work of fiction seriously

Neal contradicts himself more often than Michael Howe and thats saying something

Irrespective of who Neal Karlen is, it's pretty reprehensible to record private conversations with Prince and then release those in the audio version of the book and to the media for promotional purposes.

I´m glad I´m not the only one who doesn´t have a high opinion of him.

This is the kind of book that probably contains a lot of info that the hardcore fans would want to know, but on the other hand it is the kind of book I wouldn´t want to buy in new form, only second hand, maybe not even that.

Isn´t this the same indiscreet person who once joked about Prince´s death before Prince died so he could get more money for the memorabilia he owns? Letters and such?

I know he did a couple of interviews and worked on a musical project with Prince but I couldn´t care less.

So Karlen is saying that Prince came to his house, saw a prescription bottle with Percocet and downed a third of it?

Oh c'mon. Don't know if I want to read this book now or not.

He also is saying that Susannah was the one who didn't take any shit from Prince... eek Seriously? How many women was he with, when Susannah was in the picture? Cuz it was sure more than Susannah!

I tried to cancel my order from Amazon, the more I read the more I'm turned off. I so hope the order can get canceled. And now that I read your post, I wish it even more.

I just don't know. He recorded Prince without Prince knowing, and has those tapes. I just don't know. I'll wait til some more reviews come out.
